McKenzie Middle Sweeps Huntingdon

Posted

McKENZIE (November 5) — McKenzie Middle School’s basketball teams played host to Huntingdon last Monday sweeping both games and also the season series since MMS swept Huntingdon on the road October 18.
Lady Rebels 43, Fillies 26
Biggest difference between that first game and this one was the Fillies were a lot more prepared to play. McKenzie took a quick early lead but Huntingdon soon tied it and took the lead near the end of the first period and held a 12-7 lead at the end of the period.
The Lady Rebels had problems finding the range in the second period as the Fillies built a 22-12 lead with just under two minutes left in the half. McKenzie went on a 7-0 run in those final two minutes capped by a Savannah Davis three-pointer just seconds before the buzzer to make it a 22-19 game at halftime.
After the half, a different Lady Rebel squad came out of the locker room and threw a smothering full-court defense on the Fillies and held them scoreless the entire third period while scoring 19 points of their own mostly off of turnovers created with the full-court defense. McKenzie led 38-22 at the end of three.
In the final period, neither team scored much as they began subbing in more players into the contest. The Lady Rebels added five more points while holding the Fillies to just four points in the quarter.
McKenzie’s Savannah Davis led all scorers with 20 points including 3 three-pointers. Briley Auvenshine had 8 points including a perfect 6-6 at the free throw line. Katie Prather added 7 points including a three-pointer, Mikaela Reynolds and Kylie Reynolds chipped in 5 and 3 points respectively.

Lia Fuller and Jayvioria Hutch both led Huntingdon with 8 points each. Kelby Crossno added 6 points while Kyleigh Carter and Lexie Stevens chipped in two points each.
Rebels 49, Mustangs 29
McKenzie jumped to a quick 7-0 lead and never really looked back as they rolled to a 20-9 first quarter lead. The Rebels kept the pace in the second period outscoring the Mustangs 15-9 in the quarter to hold a 35-18 lead at the half.
Both teams played everyone in the second half as the Rebels extended their lead to 45-19 by the end of three periods. Huntingdon outscored McKenzie in the final frame 10-4 but the Rebels claimed the win 49-29.
Ten Rebels scored in the contest led by Marquez Taylor with 16 points including four three pointers. Zach Aird added 8 points including a pair of threes. Bryson Steele and Bryant Haynes had 6 and 5 points respectively. Etijay Tharpe and Zay Webber had three points each while Christopher Beck, Ralph Dennie, Stafford Roditis, and Landon Brown all chipped in two points each.
For Huntingdon, Tayshawn Rivers and Ashton Hutcherson led the Mustangs with 6 and 5 points respectively. Ty Kelley, Keller Smith, and Jay Hutch added 3 points each while Luke Cooper chipped in 2 points.
The Lady Rebels remain undefeated with an 8-0 record while the Rebels improve to 6-2 on the season.
