McKenzie Splits with Obion County Central

McKENZIE (December 7) — McKenzie High School’s Rebels and Lady Rebels hosted their counterparts from Obion County Central High School Friday. The girls game was close through three quarters, but the visiting Lady Rebels pulled away late for a 51-37 win. The hometown Rebels jumped ahead early and coasted to a 71-40 victory.
Between games, the 1997-8 MHS Rebels were honored for a historic season in which the team became the first and only to reach the state tournament. (See separate story.)

The girls contest was knotted up at 8-8 after the opening frame. Whitley Smith hit a three-pointer for McKenzie, and Anna Callahan also scored three points. Mi’Kayla Gill had a pair. Emma Johnson scored five for Central, and Hadleigh Cary hit a three.
Central pulled away in the fourth with a 21-8 advantage, led by Macy Little with seven points. B. Travis scored five, and Alexus Ables had four. Cary hit a three-pointer, and Johnson added a pair. Dani Dyer hit a three for McKenzie, and Smith also had three points. Bennett added a pair.
Obion County Central’s Emma Johnson led all scorers with 16 points, including a three-pointer. Hadleigh Cary had 12 points on four three-pointers, and Bryleigh Travis scored ten.

Whitley Smith led McKenzie with eleven, including a pair of threes. Lilly Bennett scored ten.

McKenzie jumped out to a 19-8 lead after the first frame, led by Lucas King with eight points, including a pair of three-pointers. Ben Austin scored five, including a three, and Lazarick Hill, Micah Austin and Nate Whitsell each had a pair. Jaxson Crain hit a three-pointer for Central, Reed Logan and Logan Crabtree each had a pair, and Bryson Rainey hit a free throw.
The hometown Rebels built on their lead in the third, outscoring Central 15-8. B. Austin led with five points, including a three. King and Whitsell each had four, and Lane Horton had a pair. Logan scored six for Central, and Fussell added a pair. Heading into the final frame, McKenzie led 49-30.
McKenzie punctuated the win with a 22-10 advantage in the fourth, led by King, M. Austin, Whitsell and Evan Jarrett with four points each. Hill scored three points, B. Austin added a pair, and Horton hit a free throw. Fussell hit a three for Central. Logan, Rainey and Crabtree each added a pair, and Trey McClain hit a freebie.
McKenzie’s Lucas King led all scorers with 24 points, including four three-pointers. Ben Austin scored 14 with a pair of threes, and Nate Whitsell had a dozen points.
Reed Logan led Central with 17 points, including a three-pointer.
