McKENZIE (May 31) — The McKenzie High School Rebel soccer team celebrated a great season Friday with a banquet in the high school cafeteria.
After a slow start to the season, the Rebels turned things around going into the postseason. They swept the District 13A Tournament to claim the title, then earned runner-up in Region 7.
Their season ended in the Sectional round, just one win away from a state tournament berth. With no seniors to lose, the Rebels will bring valuable experience to next season and expect big things.
During the banquet, Assistant Coach Greg Barker announced that he would not be returning next year.
Award winners included:
Offensive Players of the Year — Diego Calderon and Francisco Padilla
Defensive Players of the Year — Jack Fry and Deven Fields
Most Improved — Nate Whitsell and Andrew Cole
Goalkeeper of the Year — Will Essary
Vicki Edge Long Servant Leadership Award — Jackey Zheng
Rebel Spirit Award — Nikolas Heath
Attitude and Effort Award — Austin Gant
Rebel Award — Daniel Gonzalez
Rookie of the Year — Chance Norden
Sportsmanship Award — Andrew Murphy
Most Valuable Player — Francisco Padilla.
The Rebel soccer team included: juniors Jack Fry, Deven Fields, Diego Calderon, Francisco Padilla, Daniel Gonzalez, Zack Flippin, Ashton Marr, Jackey Zheng, Nikolas Heath, Jensen Pewitt, Nate Whitsell and Chance Norden; sophomores Austin Gant, Elijah Seivers, Andrew Murphy, Dominic Ventura and Andrew VanDyke; freshmen Will Essary, Andrew Cole, Giancarlo Cevallos and Michael Ramiscz; and managers Stephanie Vasquez, Gracie Dillingham, Haley Brasfield and Lamarr Cheatham.
The head coach is Karlene Brown. She was assisted by Greg Barker and Jeremy Bilger.
