Rebels, Lady Rebels Complete Stellar Year at State Tourney

Posted

The 2018 McKenzie Rebels completed their golf season last week at the TSSAA Small Division Golf State Tournament at WillowBrook Country Club in Manchester.
There were a total of 43 lady participants and 63 gentleman participants from across the state in the tournament.
The ladies finished their season by placing fourth at the state tournament. Maggie Glass concluded her sophomore season with an individual tie for tenth place, shooting 86/84 over the two days. Julie French ended her high school golf career with a 20th place individual finish after her two-day scores of 96/87. The ladies improved their second day team score by eleven strokes, the second-most improved of any ladies team from day one, as well as having the second best girls team score on day two. They had the tournament’s fourth-best second day team score, ladies or gentlemen. Their fourth place finish was eight strokes ahead of fifth place TCA and only eight strokes behind third place Sale Creek. The ladies were only ten strokes out of finishing in a tie for second in the state. Summertown won the ladies championship.
The gentlemen finished the season with a seventh place state tournament finish. Ben Austin finished his high school golf career tied for 15th individually with a 78/80 two-day performance. Johnathan Moore finished his second season on the team with tournament scores of 88/84, placing him in a tie for 42nd. Like the ladies, the gentlemen’s second day performance was second-most improved among their male competitors, with a 14-stroke better team score. Signal Mountain won the gentlemen’s championship with a close three-stroke win over defending state champion Alcoa.

To put McKenzie’s golf teams’ state tournament and season’s performance in perspective, in the TSSAA sport of golf, there are 160 schools classified as Small Division, 97 of which field a ladies golf team. Our ladies finished fourth in the State. Of those same 160 Small Division schools, 107 field a gentlemen’s golf team. Our gentlemen finished seventh. Those numbers elevate the success of our golf teams this season.
The 2018 season concludes with the ladies posting a final season record of 50-11-2. The gentlemen end their season with a record of 64-11, with both teams claiming District and Region Championships this season and the gentlemen not losing a nine-hole match the entire season.
The dual District and Region Championships in the same season by both teams were a first in school history.
We say goodbye and thank you to seniors Ben Austin, Mallory Cole, Julie French, Will McBride and Olivia Wright. We thank them for their contribution to our golf team’s success through their dedication, leadership and actions, both on and off the course.
We thank everyone who has followed, encouraged and supported our team this season. We greatly appreciate it and look forward to your support in the future.
