McKENZIE (February 2) — A new local eatery will open Monday, February 11 on Waldren Street downtown. Sarge’s Chow Hall hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony Saturday morning.
Owner Rebecca Sargent-Dyal was joined by friends, family and business and community leaders, including Mayor Jill Holland.
The location formerly operated as Cathey’s Southern Style Cornbread and Cathey’s Restaurant.
Originally from Detroit, Sargent-Dyal has lived in McKenzie since 2000 and most recently worked in Bethel University’s Physician Assistant program as associate admissions director.
In an interview with The Banner, Sargent-Dyal said that owning her own restaurant had long been a passion and a pipe dream, but this opportunity “fell in my lap at the right time in the right place.”
She cites military ties in her family as the inspiration for the Chow Hall’s armed services décor. In fact, her son Cedric Yon, U.S. Army, will be working at the restaurant.
Sarge’s mission statement reads, “Our goal is to serve amazing food with a taste of history in a warm, welcoming environment with a great passion to serve.”
The restaurant will serve breakfast and lunch featuring a wide menu. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 5 a.m.-2 p.m. The phone number is 731-393-0154.
Sargent-Dyal expressed her thanks Tammy Cathey, Jones Electric, Graves Plumbing and her family and friends for their support in getting Sarge’s off the ground.
