ATWOOD (February 4) — West Carroll hosted Dresden High School Monday for a pair of non-district basketball contests. The Lady War Eagles fell behind early, but battled back several times to make it close before the Lady Lions ultimately took a 55-40 win. The War Eagles dominated early and held the Lions at bay down the stretch for a 65-49 victory.
It was also Senior Night for West Carroll. Prior to the games, the senior basketball players were recognized on the court, joined by family members and friends.
Katie Holt is the lone senior Lady War Eagle. Senior War Eagles are Dawson Hardwick, Aaron Heckert, Zach Heckert, Tyson Keymon and P. J. Odom. (There are no senior cheerleaders.)
Dresden Lady Lions 55, West Carroll Lady War Eagles 40
The Lady Lions jumped out to a 16-10 lead after the opening frame, led by Katie Washburn with 12 points on four three-pointers. Rachel Childress and Mikayla Peterson each had a pair. Lady War Eagle Amaya Thompson scored six points, and Alyssa Butler and Tatym Keymon each had a pair.
Dresden added to the lead in the second quarter, outscoring West Carroll 15-11. Washburn led the Lady Lions with ten points, including a pair of threes. Tinley Winn scored three points, and Peterson added a pair. Katie Holt led the Lady War Eagles with five points, including a three-pointer. Thompson, Macey Cunningham and Denver Brooks each had a pair. At the half, Dresden led 31-21.
West Carroll cut into the deficit with a 12-9 edge in the third, led by Keymon with four points. Holt hit another three, and M. Cunningham also scored three points. Gracie Cunningham had a pair. Winn scored four for the Lady Lions, Childress hit a three-pointer, and Peterson added a pair. Entering the final frame, Dresden led 40-33.
The Lady Lions sealed the win with a 15-7 tilt in the fourth, led by Childress with eight points. Peterson scored five, and Washburn added a pair. Thompson led West Carroll with four points. Keymon added a pair, and Butler hit a free throw.
