Clarksburg Mayor Named To Baptist University Board

Posted

Clarksburg Mayor Dr. Howell Wayne Todd was named to the Board of Directors of Baptist Health Sciences University (BHSU) in Memphis. The University is affiliated with Baptist Memorial Health Care in Memphis, where it was founded in 1912 as a School of Nursing. It has grown into a fully accredited and comprehensive institution offering a broad range of undergraduate and graduate programs in 14 majors in health-related fields.

“I have long admired and been appreciative of the role of the family of Baptist Health organizations beginning with how they served one of my family members in Memphis 70 years ago.” Todd said. “We only have to look in Carroll County to see how we benefit so much from Baptist’s contributions to our quality of life through our local hospital staff. I look forward to contributing back to Baptist in whatever way I am able.”

According to the mission statement, the University prepares graduates for careers of service and leadership by providing a comprehensive health sciences education within an integrated environment of learning and Christian principles. The Memphis campus has been ranked as the safest college campus in Tennessee and one of the safest in the nation according to Niche Best Colleges rankings. Each individual degree program is fully accredited, and student costs are quite competitive. Ninety-eight percent of the students receive some type of financial assistance.

Dr. Betty McGarvey, BHSU President, said she was pleased to have Todd agree to join the Board and to be able to benefit from his broad experience in university administration. “Dr. Todd’s background fills a need on our Board for someone with broad experience in both public and private university administration,” said McGarvey.

Susan Breeden, CEO of Baptist Hospital-Carroll County, said she was happy to have a representative from the area on the Board. She said, “Dr. Todd has a wealth of experience he can bring to the Board. It is my hope that more people will become familiar with the University and that many of our high school students interested in health care fields will consider BHSU. Their graduates are top notch, and the affiliation with one of the largest health care providers in the nation is a significant bonus for the students.”

Todd retired in 2001 from the presidency of Mississippi College and returned to his family home in Clarksburg. He previously served as chief executive officer of the state university system in South Dakota and as Vice-Chancellor and Executive Assistant to the Chancellor of the Tennessee Board of Regents for several years. He was elected Mayor of Clarksburg in 2018 and has announced his intent to seek reelection this year.
