County Commission Supports Second Amendment Rights

Posted

HUNTINGDON (March 9) — Carroll County commissioners with a vote of 17 in favor, 1 abstained and 1 opposed, approved a resolution supporting the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
The resolution concurs with state and federal law which “recognizes the inalienable right of its law-abiding citizens to keep and bear arms.” It also indicates the county will not consider any legislation that restricts any of the inalienable rights of its law-abiding citizens, including, but not limited to, the right to keep and bear arms. It does not grant persons to carry handguns without a permit. State law supersedes any local resolution.
Gun-rights advocates throughout Tennessee are encouraging county and municipal governments to pass such legislation.
Commissioners accepted the resignation of Commissioner Jeff Carter, District 5, Huntingdon who submitted his resignation. The commission declared the open seat and eligible persons from that district can seek to fill the unexpired term until the August election. Carter moved from the county. Interested persons can seek the unexpired term in the August election by qualifying by April 2 at the Carroll County Election Commission.
Canine officer Allie is retiring after service to the Carroll County Sheriff’s Department. The commission approved a resolution to honor Allie and to gift her to Deputy Jason Walker as his personal pet.
Two resolutions approved rezoning in the Planning Region around the 1000-Acre Recreation Lake. It allows limited assembly of items in L-2 zone on appeal request. The other resolution is to rezone the property of Marty Ensley on Leach Road to L2 from L1.
A budget amendment was approved for the General Purpose School Fund. It authorized the acceptance of a grant of $168,695 in vocational equipment.
A resolution approve the reappointment of Eli Ford, Don Reed, Casey Drewry, Carl Nolen and Bradley C. Smith to the Carroll County Board of Equalization for a term ending March 2022.

Jan Ostiguy was authorized to speak to the commission.

“I expressed my personal concerns about the sustainability of the Watershed budget and since that evening I have heard many expressions of gratitude for our bringing these concerns before this commission. I also have heard concerns about the lake itself: about safety issues on the lake, about the sludge building up in the lake making some of the personal docks unstable and causing difficult to navigate boats...
“I have been to meeting of both this commission and the Watershed Authority and have not heard one word discussed about any of the issues...
“It was my understanding that a meeting was to take place between the budget committee of this commission and the Watershed Authority but that has not happened to my knowledge...
“I have spoken with our State Representative and he consulted other authorities at the state level, none of whom understand why it is not being discussed at the local level...
“I share with you in October the bill passed in 1983 concerning the wheel tax issue and also the State Attorney General Hebert H. Slatery III issued by his opinion on April 1, 2015 – stating county commissions have the authority to increase, decrease or repeal the wheel tax...
“So here I am again standing before you asking what have you done about the lake wheel tax issue? Probably more importantly what are you going to do in answer to the concerns of the citizens of Carroll County?”
