District Governor Visits McKenzie Rotary Club

McKENZIE (November 19) — McKenzie Rotary Club welcomed Rotary District Governor Robert “Bob” Huffman of Clarksville to the local service club’s weekly meeting on Tuesday, November 19. It is tradition that the district governor visit each of the clubs in his district during the Rotary year. District 6760 stretches from middle to west Tennessee.
Huffman was honored to participate in a ceremony to honor three Rotarians along with a retired community leader.
Three persons were named as Paul Harris Fellows. A minimum of $1,000 was given in their names to the Rotary Foundation to provide aid and comfort to people throughout the world. The funds are used for humanitarian and education programs. A Paul Harris Fellow is the largest single honor the local club bestows.
Saudia Akin, executive director of the McKenzie/Carroll County United Neighbors was honored in two ways. She because a Paul Harris Fellow recognizing her contribution as a servant leader in the community with her daily mission to serve the community’s underprivileged. Saudia is a member of the local service club. A $1,000 donation was given to the Rotary Foundation in her honor. The donation was part of a contribution given in the memory of Demetra Perkins, her committed her life to service as a teacher, mentor, and an advocate for children. Mrs. Perkins was stricken with polio at an early age but lived her life as a person of inspiration.
Akin’s second honor came when she received a $3,000 check from the Fanny Baxter Moore Fund to United Neighbors. The Moore Fund was established by the late Fanny Baxter Moore over 50 years ago and the Rotary Club serves as trustees for the fund. It can provides funds to serve worthy, needy McKenzians.

Ramona Washburn, publisher emeritus of The McKenzie Banner, was honored for her community service with a Paul Harris Fellow designation. The financial contribution was given in memory of Demetra Perkins to honor Washburn, who is the widow of James L. Washburn, a former Rotarian.
Mark Warren, city president of Carroll Bank and Trust also received a Paul Harris Fellow recognition. Warren serves his church and community through volunteer service. The funds for his award were provided by an anonymous donor.
Ed Perkins, a former Rotary district governor and member of the McKenzie service club, was honored with his third Paul Harris Fellow award.
President Joel Washburn presented a facimile check in the amount of $1,200 to Rotary International’s Polio-Plus campaign to eradicate polio worldwide. McKenzie club’s local initiative is called the Demetra Perkins Polio-Plus campaign. The check represent a $40 contribution for each of the 30 members.
Huffman said the live polio virus is now limited to two countries: Pakistan and Afghanistan, where warlords and other leaders restrict case workers from administering the vaccine. Nigeria will soon be declared free of polio, said Huffman.
The international organization of Rotary takes on the world’s most vexing problems, said the district governor.
