Huntingdon School Board Amends Activities Policy

HUNTINGDON (April 13) — Non-certified staff members may now serve as head coaches and leaders of extracurricular activities at Huntingdon Special School District. The Board of Education approved the change, which previously stated only certified staff members could serve as the leader of student activities.
The change comes as the school continues to add extracurricular activities. Next year, the school will add soccer and volleyball to its extracurricular activities.
Patricia Dillahunty, director of schools, said there are only a certain number of certified staff members who wish to be involved in extracurricular activities. Each new activity added puts extra responsibility on staff members.
Dr. Jonathan Kee, director of schools-elect, said no one has been hired in violation of current policy, regardless of what is circulating on social media. In fact, next year’s teachers have not yet been hired, said Kee.

Chairman Dr. Lee Carter and board members urged Kee to first offer any leadership position for extracurricular activities to a certified staff members before offering to non-certified members.
The board authorized Dillahunty to pursue the purchase of real estate near Huntingdon Primary School. She said one parcel is listed on the market.
Kee announced its time to resurface gymnasium floors. The HHS gym will also be retrofitted to accommodate volleyball nets. The last resurfacing was 10 to 12 years ago.
Dr. Lee Carter received unanimous approval to seek reelection as Northwest Director of the Tennessee School Board Association.
The next meeting is May 20 at 5 p.m.
