Huntingdon Sweeps Dresden, Loses Two to Gleason

Huntingdon’s basketball teams visited Weakley County on back to back nights going to Dresden Friday, December 3 and to Gleason on Saturday afternoon December 4.

Fillies 74, Lady Lions 57
The Fillies opened up a 15-9 first period lead increasing it to a 34-21 lead by halftime. In the third period, Huntingdon maintained their double digit lead with a 46-34 score heading into the final period. Younger players from both squads contributed a lot of points in the final period with the Fillies outscoring Dresden 28-23 in the period.

Three Fillies scored in double figures led by Lilly Kee with 26 points followed by Lia Fuller with 12 and Sophie Singleton with 11. Delaney Byars added nine while Sydney Anderson had six points and Josey Stokes had five points. Ashlyn Rich contributed four points and Sarabeth Smith chipped in a point.

Dresden was led by Bella Bone with 10 points followed closely by Haylee Jarred and Maggie Oliver with eight points each. Keely Mathis and Allie Spaulding added seven and six points respectively while Ivey Curry had five points along with Isabell Connell with three points for the Lady Lions.

Mustangs 43, Lions 31
Huntingdon and Dresden’s boys both got off to slow starts offensively with the Mustangs leading 9-5 at the end of the first period. A 12-5 run in the second period opened a 21-10 lead by halftime. The two teams played evenly in the third period with the Mustangs holding a 32-21 lead into the fourth period and maintained their lead to the end.

Jeb Atkinson and Jeremiah Irvine led the Mustangs with 14 and 13 points respectively while Keller Smith added nine points. Kaleb Pearson had three points while Ty Kelley and Aden Hutcherson chipped in two points apiece for Huntingdon.

The Lions were led by Steven Hobock with 11 points. Tatum Oliver and Trey Addams added six and five points respectively. Reese Bell had four points while Porter Finney had three points and Chandler Turnbow chipped in two points for the Lions.

Lady Bulldogs 75, Fillies 48
The Fillies ran into a buzzsaw against the Lady Bulldogs who rained three pointers hitting five in the first period alone. The game opened with both teams swapping threes but Gleason took an 11-3 lead over the next two minutes and went on to lead 26-15 by the end of the period.

Gleason outscored Huntingdon 19-11 in the second period building a 45-26 lead by halftime. An eight-point third period for the Fillies while giving up 22 points put the game out of reach heading into the final period with Gleason leading 67-34. Younger players got in the game during the fourth period with the Fillies outscoring the Lady Bulldogs 14-8 during the period.

Lilly Kee led Huntingdon with 18 points while Sophie Singleton, Josey Stokes, and Ashlyn Rich added six points each. Delaney Byars and Sarabeth Smith had four points each. Sydney Anderson had three and Annabelle Singleton chipped in a point.

Gleason was led by Alayna Anderson with 38 points while Carrington Lifsey and Ava Sawyers added 13 points each. Sophie Wilson had five points while Tinsley Parkins, Daisy Blevins, and Jaeda Perry chipped in two points each for the Lady Bulldogs.

Bulldogs 44, Mustangs 38
The boys’ contest turned into a barn burner in the second half and overtime with Gleason hitting multiple free throws to put the game away at the end.

Both teams played patient half court offenses which led to low scoring. The Mustangs led early 4-2 near the midway point of the first period and opened it up to 11-5 with two minutes left. Gleason came right back with a run including a pair of three-pointers to make it a 16-12 Huntingdon lead at the end of the first period.

Gleason took their first lead 17-16 on a three-pointer with just under four minutes left in the second period. Both teams went scoreless for the next three minutes until the Mustangs retook the lead 18-17 near halftime.

In the third period, the Bulldogs took the lead back with an 11-2 run during the period that gave them a 28-20 lead heading into the final period. The two teams were physical in the third period with plenty of fouls called and that continued into the final period.

The Bulldogs nailed a three in the first 20 seconds to give Gleason a 31-20 lead but the Mustangs weren’t done yet as they ran off a 7-0 run over the next 3:30 to make it a 31-27 game. Huntingdon’s Jeb Atkinson later tied the game 31-31 on a basket and foul. The Mustangs took a 35-32 lead on free throws but Gleason tied it at 35-35 on a three pointer with 25 seconds left

Both teams missed chances to win it in the final seconds with Huntingdon missing a pair of free throws and Gleason missed a shot at the buzzer.

The Mustangs hit a pair of free throws in the first minute of overtime to take a 37-35 lead but Gleason hit a three-pointer to retake the lead 38-37. They increased it to 40-37 on a layup while the Mustangs missed several opportunities to score on their next trip down the floor.

Gleason sealed the win hitting 4-6 free throws in the final minute of overtime.

Jeb Atkinson led Huntingdon with 20 points followed by Jeremiah Irvine with nine points. Keller Smith had four points. Ethan Ramsey had three points while Kaleb Pearson chipped in two points for the Mustangs.

Gleason was led by Garrett Pinkston with 26 points. Kylan Borneman had seven points. Carter Cooper had six points and Kolton Crochet had five points.
