According to the report by Officer Labe Ezell, he responded to a call about two male shoplifters that were being detained by store security personnel at Walmart. Ezell identified the two men as Phillips and Christopher Copeland. Phillips admitted to having a stolen cell phone charger in his front pants pocket. A small baggie containing meth and a cutoff straw/tooter were also found in Phillips’s possession. At one point, Phillips became agitated and threw his head back against the office wall, causing damage to the drywall. When asked if he had any outstanding warrants against him, Phillips said he had one for probation violation out of Weakley County. A computer check revealed that he actually had three active warrants for evading arrest, reckless endangerment, and theft of property out of Weakley County. Copeland was not found to be in possession of any stolen items, though he admitted to having knowledge of the theft. Copeland was not charged, but Walmart did ban him from the store.

Upon arrival, Ezell observed that two window screens had been cut and one window had been broken at the back of the residence. Various tools, cleaning supplies, and a small ladder had been taken. While searching behind the residence, Ezell found a footpath going through a tree line, which led to an open lot, where Ezell found some of the stolen items sitting out in plain sight. A resident living nearby told Ezell that McCorry had told her the items belonged to him. That next day, an unnamed person told officers that McCorry had tried to sell the stolen tools, and warrants were issued against McCorry.
