Kindness Week at Gleason School

Posted

During the school week of February 10-14, all Gleason School students, in grades Pre-K—12th grade, had the opportunity to participate in “Kindness Week.” The week was designed to encourage and promote kindness among students, and was organized by Gleason School Nurse, Tina Kelly, as well as student members of the Gleason chapter of the Weakley County Prevention Coalition.
To celebrate Kindness Week, elementary students enjoyed dress-up days: Monday—Let Kindness Shine (wear sunglasses), Tuesday—Hats Off to Kindness (wear a fun hat), Wednesday—Take STEPS Toward Kindness (wear silly socks), Thursday—Cowboy Up for Kindness (wear boots), and Friday—Kindness Matters at Gleason School (wear a kindness shirt). Mrs. April Corbin’s first-grade class won a popcorn party for most participation in dress-up days.
In addition, teachers planned lessons centered around the theme of kindness throughout the week, with books like The Invisible Boy, Each Kindness, One Winter’s Day, The Grouchy Ladybug, Llama Llama and the Bully Goat, and The Spiffiest Giant in Town.
During Kindness Week, students were challenged to plan acts of kindness for others. Gleason School students rose to the challenge, working to spread kindness all over the school and community. For example, high school and junior high students purchased “Candy-grams of Kindness” to be delivered to their friends at school, with all money raised going to The American Heart Association, which came to a total of $577.02. In addition, students were asked to create cards for patients at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. As a result, Gleason School Nurse Tina Kelly mailed 306 cards to the hospital as a part of Gleason School’s Kindness Week.
