McKENZIE (October 8) — The McKenzie Lady Rebels kicked off the soccer playoffs Tuesday with a dominant, 8-1 home win over Gibson County in the District 13A semifinals. The win set up a Thursday rematch with Westview for the district championship and hosting rights in the opening round of the Region 7 Tournament. The Lady Chargers handed the Lady Rebels their only district loss of the season, 4-3, two weeks prior. Gibson County controlled the ball for much of the first half and scored the first goal from near the corner on a sharp angle. The Lady Rebels gained the momentum with about 15 minutes to play in the first half and tied the contest with 13:56 on the clock as Savannah Nesbitt’s kick was deflected by a Lady Pioneer player into the net. Just 19 seconds later, Allie Chappell gave McKenzie the lead with a long goal shot through several defenders. Nesbitt and Haley Brasfield each added a goal in the first half. The Lady Rebels maintained near-complete control in the second half, pressuring Gibson County relentlessly with shot after shot on goal. Nesbitt added another goal, and Maggie Aird, Savanah Hill and Isabella Colotta each scored. Goalkeeper Gracie Dillingham recorded six saves in the rout and prevented several other shots with aggressive defense. Nesbitt had three total goals and an assist. Chappell finished with one goal and four assists. The lone goals by Brasfield, Aird, Hill and Colotta rounded out the McKenzie scoring.
