Lady Rebels Dominate Trojanettes Late to Advance to Semis, 53-38

McKENZIE (February 22) — The Region 6A Girls Basketball Tournament began Friday with quarterfinal games hosted by the higher seed. The McKenzie Lady Rebels hosted Collinwood at Bethel University’s Crisp Arena, the scheduled site of the remainder of the tournament.
The Lady Rebels had a one-point edge at the half, but the Trojanettes battled for a tie after three quarters. McKenzie responded by opening the fourth with a 15-0 run en route to a 53-38 win.
With the victory, the Lady Rebels advanced to face Loretto in a semifinal game Monday night.

The Lady Rebels had a 16-12 lead after the opening frame, led by Shelby Davis and Lilly Bennett with seven points each, Davis with a three-pointer. Anna Callahan had a pair. Trojanettes Kristen Retherford, A.C. Whitehead and Asia Kelly each scored four points.

Collinwood rallied 12-9 in the second quarter to cut the deficit to just a point, led by Retherford with five points, including a three. Sophie Gobbell also hit a three-pointer, and Whithead and Gracie Saxon each had a pair. Bennett hit a three for McKenzie, and Davis, Callahan and Dani Dyer each had a pair. At the half, the Lady Rebels led 25-24.
The Trojanettes tied things up with a 7-6 edge in the third, led by Gobbell with a three-pointer. Retherford and Rosalinda Alvaredo each had a pair. Davis, Bennett and Whitley Smith each had a pair for McKenzie. Entering the final frame, the score was 31-31.
The Lady Rebels pulled away with a 22-7 advantage in the fourth, led by Mi’Kayla Gill and Camille Travis with five points each, Travis with a three-pointer. Smith also hit a three. Davis, Bennett, Callahan and La’Jada Edmonson each had a pair, and Dyer hit a free throw. Retherford hit a three for Collinwood, and Whitehead and Gobbell each added a pair.
Lilly Bennett led McKenzie with 14 points, including a three-pointer. Shelby Davis scored 13, also with a three.
Kristen Retherford led the Trojanettes with 14 points, including a pair of threes.
