McKENZIE (December 11) — McKenzie High School’s scheduled opponents for Friday were forced to cancel, but the basketball teams found opponents to play from different schools and picked up solid wins over each.
The Lady Rebels faced the Union City Lady Tornadoes and gradually built up a lead to claim a 52-40 win.
In the nightcap, the Rebels played host to Dyersburg. McKenzie dominated the first quarter, but the momentum swung hard to the Trojans in the second. Trailing by five at the half, the Rebels regained the lead in the third. The teams battled back-and-forth until the final minutes, when McKenzie pulled away for a 53-45 victory.
Lady Rebels 52, Lady Tornadoes 40
The Lady Rebels had a 14-11 lead after the opening frame, led by Lilly Bennett with five points. Briley Auvenshine scored four, Kylie Reynolds had three points, and Mikaela Reynolds had a pair. Sophie Theobald led Union City with five points, including a three-pointer. Jada Williams scored four, and Khia German had a pair.
The Lady Tornadoes cut the deficit with an 11-10 edge in the second quarter, led by Amari Bonds with five points. Williams scored four, and S. Theobald added a pair. M. Reynolds and Dani Dyer each scored four points for McKenzie, and Anna Callahan had a pair. At the half, the Lady Rebels led 24-22.
McKenzie had a 16-12 advantage in the third, led by Savannah Davis with six points on a pair of threes. K. Reynolds scored four with a three-pointer. Bennett, Callahan and Kyeana Sneed each had a pair. Bonds led Union City with six points, Williams scored four, and Marlee Theobald had a pair. Entering the final frame, McKenzie led 40-34.
The Lady Rebels doubled up the Lady Tornadoes 12-6 in the fourth, led by K. Reynolds with four points. Dyer, Davis, M. Reynolds and Bennett each added a pair. Williams, Bonds and S. Theobald each added a pair for Union City.
