Lady Wildcats Bringing in Former South Gibson & SIUE Standout at the Break

MCKENZIE, Tenn. – Coach Chris Nelson announced Thursday the signing of former South Gibson High School and Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville standout Christen King. 

Prep accolades include: Second team All-West Tennessee after averaging 16.5 points, 5 rebounds, 3.6 assists her senior season at South Gibson County High School ... Two-time first team All-Conference selection ... Tabbed Super Senior by the Jackson Sun before the start of her senior season ... Averaged 13 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two blocks per game as a junior ... Holds South Gibson County school records for single-season assists (120) and single-season steals (78) as well as  career assists (201) ... Scored her 1,000th point in January 2017.

SIUE Highlights : 2017-18: Scored season-high 10 points in season debut against Air Force ... Shot 3 of 4 from the field against the Falcons ... Appeared in 17 games ... Hit 10 of 16 free throws ... Helped the Cougars to their second-ever NCAA Division I postseason appearance with a first-round game at Central Arkansas ... 

SIUE Highlights: 2018-19: Second on the team in scoring with 8.6 points per contest and second on the team in steals with 39 ... Turned in her top offensive performance of the season with 23 points, including the final shot, with a win over Tennessee Tech (2/28) ... Her layup with 48.7 seconds remaining snapped a 61-61 tie and served as the final points of the game after scoring 19 points in the second half ... Grabbed career-best 13 rebounds against McKendree ... Started 23 games for the season ... Shot 64 percent from the field over her final three games of the season.

Coach Nelson was happy with the signing. “We are excited to add Christen to our lineup. She is an extremely talented player that adds athleticism to our team. We followed her high school career closely and kept up with her success at SIUE.”

King will be eligible when the team returns to the court for the second half of the season. Bethel is ranked No. 24 in the latest 2020-21 Women's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 Poll. The Lady Wildcats return to action December 29 at Faulkner University in Montgomery. Their next home game will be December 21 hosting Life University in Crisp Arena at noon.
