McKENZIE — Louise Scates celebrates her 100th birthday Monday.

Rebecca Louise Yates was born January 11, 1921 in Trezevant to William McKinley Yates and Nina Rebecca Yancey.

She graduated from Trezevant High School and attended Bethel College.

She married Ira Scates, Jr. on December 6, 1940, and their union yielded two daughters, Barbara (Angelici) and Betty (Bratton), four grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Louise worked for the City of McKenzie for 30 years and later for the jewelry store owned by Kenneth and Linda Miller.

She is a member of First Baptist Church and remains active in politics.

Louise told The Banner she has no big plans for her birthday but had some family visitors during the holidays.

She attributes her longevity to her family first and foremost. She noted her mother lived to 102 and her grandmother to 103. She says she’s stayed busy all her life and that God has blessed her with good health.
