McKENZIE (November 26) — McKenzie High School hosted Dresden Tuesday night ahead of the Thanksgiving break for a pair of non-district basketball contests.
The Lady Rebels kept a defensive battle close, but the Lady Lions held on at the end for a 40-32 win. In the nightcap, the Rebels came out hot for a big lead and coasted to a 56-30 victory.
Dresden Lady Lions 40, McKenzie Lady Rebels 32
The Lady Lions held an 8-7 edge after the opening frame. Lucy Curry hit a three-pointer, and Rachel Childress also scored three points. Tinley Winn had a pair. Lady Rebel Lilly Bennett scored five, including a three, and Shelby Davis had a pair.
Dresden outscored McKenzie 10-7 in the second quarter, led by Katie Washburn with eight points, including a pair of threes. Winn added a pair. Davis led the Lady Rebels with four points, including a three. Bennett added a pair, and Kylie Reynolds hit a free throw. At the half, Dresden led 18-14.
The Lady Lions added to the lead with a 10-8 advantage in the third. Washburn hit a three, and Carson Johnson also scored three points. Childress and Winn each added a pair. Davis scored four for McKenzie, and Reynolds and Dani Dyer each had a pair. Entering the final frame, the Lady Lions led 28-22.
Dresden closed out the win with a 12-10 tilt in the fourth, led by Childress with six points. Johnson, Winn and Washburn each added a pair. Bennett led the Lady Rebels with five. Davis and Anna Callahan each had a pair, and Reynolds hit a freebie.
Lady Lion Katie Washburn led all scorers with 13 points, including a trio of three-pointers. Rachel Childress scored eleven.
Shelby Davis and Lilly Bennett led McKenzie with a dozen points apiece, each with a three.
Rebels 56, Lions 30
McKenzie started on an 11-0 run and led 18-5 after the first frame. Lazarick Hill was out front with six points, and Lucas King scored five with a three-pointer. Evan Jarrett, Nate Whitsell and Witt Mitchum each had a pair, and Lane Horton hit a free throw. Lion Kaleb Dilday hit a three, and Trey Adams had a pair.
The Rebels pressed the lead with a 14-4 advantage in the second quarter. Hill led again with six, and King scored four. Mitchum and Caleb Gill each had a pair. Adams scored Dresden’s four points. At the half, the Rebels led 32-9.
McKenzie enjoyed a 14-12 tilt in the third, led by Jarrett with six points. Hill, Horton, Gill and Micah Austin each had a pair. Dilday, Adams, Steven Hobock and Chandler Turnbow each hit a three-pointer for Dresden. Heading into the final frame, McKenzie led 46-21.
The Rebels capped the win with a 10-9 edge in the fourth, led by Eli Surber with five points, including a three. Bryson Steele and Etijay Tharpe each had a pair, and Bryant Haynes hit a free throw. Adams led the Lions with six, and Hobock scored three points.
Lion Trey Adams led all scorers with 15 points, including a three-pointer.
Lazarick Hill led McKenzie with 14 points, and Lucas King scored nine with a three.
