CLARKSBURG (January 5) — McKenzie began district play on the road Tuesday with a pair of contests at Clarksburg High School and earned a sweep. Both teams pulled away early to cruise to victory, the Lady Rebels 73-25 and the Rebels 63-26.
Lady Rebels 73, Lady Rockets 25
The Lady Rebels stormed out to a 22-2 lead after the opening frame, led by Savannah Davis and Lilly Bennett with seven points each, both with a three-pointer. Savannah Nesbitt, Katie Chesser, MiKaela Reynolds and Kylie Reynolds each had a pair. Kyleigh Scott had Clarksburg’s two points.
The Lady Rockets cut the deficit with a 19-15 edge in the second quarter, led by Sarah Derryberry with eight points. Jasmine Bailey scored seven, and Makiya Abdallah had four points. Davis led McKenzie with five points, including a three. M. Reynolds and Bennett each scored four, Reynolds with a three-pointer. Nesbitt added a pair. At the half, the Lady Rebels led 37-21.
McKenzie had a 27-2 advantage in the third, led by Davis and Bennett with six points each, Davis on a pair of threes. K. Reynolds scored five with a three. Kyeana Sneed hit a three, and M. Reynolds also had three points. Dani Dyer and Anna Callahan each had a pair. Abdallah added a pair for Clarksburg. Entering the final frame, McKenzie led 64-23.
The Lady Rebels capped the win with a 9-2 tilt in the fourth, led by Chesser with five points. Callahan scored four. Scott and Sam Seagraves each hit a free throw for the Lady Rockets.
Lady Rebel Savannah Davis led all scorers with 18 points, including four three-pointers. Lilly Bennett scored 17 with a three.
Sarah Derryberry led Clarksburg with eight points.
Rebels 63, Rockets 26
McKenzie had a 16-2 lead after the first frame, led by Caleb Gill and Marquez Taylor with five points each, Gill with a three-pointer. Zayden McCaslin scored four, and Johnathan Moore had a pair. Kris Hooker had both Clarksburg points.
The Rebels pulled away with a 23-7 advantage in the second quarter, led by Taylor with six points. Gill scored four. Moore and Eli Surber each hit a three, and Bryson Steele also scored three points. McCaslin and Elijah Seivers each had a pair. Myles Rogers led the Rockets with four points, Hooker added a pair, and Dylan Pruett hit a free throw. At the half, the Rebels led 39-9.
McKenzie had a 13-12 edge in the third, led by Gill with six points. Steele, Surber and Etijay Tharpe each had a pair, and Taylor hit a freebie. Dakota Garner led Clarksburg with five points, including a three. Rogers scored four, Spencer Webb had a pair, and Brayden Cobb hit a free throw. Heading into the final frame, McKenzie led 52-21.
The Rebels sealed the win with an 11-5 tilt in the fourth, led by Zay Webber and Bryant Haynes with four points each. Christopher Beck had a pair, and Tharpe hit a freebie. Cobb led the Rockets with three points, and Hooker and Jakobe Clark each hit a free throw.
Rebel Caleb Gill led all scorers with 15 points, including a three-pointer. Marquez Taylor scored a dozen.
Myles Rogers led Clarksburg with eight points.
