MHS Class of 1969 Football Players, Coach Reunite

Posted

The McKenzie High School Class of 1969 gathered over the weekend of October 25-26 to celebrate their 50-year reunion.
On Friday night, nine senior football members from the Class of 1969 gathered at Terry and Suzanne Howell’s home for a dinner and a period of reminiscing.
Former Rebel football coach Jerry Escue and his wife Dorothy were present at the outing. McKenzie was Coach Escue’s first head coaching job, and he rolled into town just weeks before the season began.
The 27-year-old coach did not disappoint. In 1967, he led the team to a 7-4 season. This included a historic win over Grove High School and an appearance against Memphis University School in the Little Cotton Bowl.

In 1968, the Rebels posted an 8-3 record featuring a huge win over Lexington and a bid to the Tiny Knee Bowl, where the Rebels faced Covington.
In 1969, his team logged a 7-3 record and beat Henry County High School in their first year of consolidation.
His 1970 Rebels went 8-3, including a victory over Lake County in the Tiny Knee Bowl, McKenzie’s first bowl victory.
With a 71.4 percent winning percentage, Jerry Escue left a coaching legacy in McKenzie, and he is still loved by his former players.
Coach Escue and many of the former players braved the elements to watch the Rebels play Obion County that night.
