McKenzie Middle School Bridge Program Has ‘Entrepreneur Expo’

Posted

During McKenzie Middle School’s annual Bridge Camp, students worked to invent new and innovative product plans to present to a group of influential business people in McKenzie. McKenzie Middle School’s Bridge Camp is a summer learning camp created to help students reach benchmarks before advancing to the next grade in August.

Throughout the week, students spent six-to-seven hours creating their products and planning presentations for Wednesday’s “Entrepreneur Expo.” The Entrepreneur Expo activity provided students a break from instruction and encouraged creativity while also teaching practical business skills. Students had the option to work individually, in partners, or in groups. Presentations were made using Google Slides, posters, or props.

The Expo was inspired by the television show, Shark Tank. The student entered the “Shark Zone” (the McKenzie Middle School Library), where they presented their products and business plans to the “Sharks,” Dr. Josh Filtz, Christie Chappell, Lynn Watkins, Willie Huffman, and Drew Beeler. At the end of each student’s presentation, the Sharks asked questions regarding financial plans, competition, investment costs, target markets, advertising, and more.

Students were organized into grades before presenting. After all students in each grade presented, the Sharks deliberated and decided on a winner based on various criteria. At the end of the Expo, they voted on an overall winner to “invest in.”
