McKenzie Middle Thumps Henderson County North

The McKenzie Rebels put their unbeaten record on the line hosting Henderson County North on Thursday, September 8 winning 30-2.
 
Henderson won the toss and took the ball first going three and out before punting to the Rebels. The Rebels went three and out and punted with Henderson fumbling the return and the Rebels recovered. On first down, McKenzie completed a pass but the receiver was stripped by a Henderson defender and ran it all the way to the McKenzie 24. A five-yard sack by Ramon Tellez (65) on third down put Henderson in a 4th down and long situation and didn’t convert the first down turning it over on downs.
 
 The Rebels closed the first quarter and opened the second quarter with possession driving the ball near the McKenzie 40 where an attempted punt was blocked by Henderson which ended up being a safety giving Henderson a 2-0 lead. Henderson got the ball back on the kickoff and returned into Rebel territory. Jacobi Melton (6) picked off a pass in the endzone and returned it out to the McKenzie 23. Two plays later, Cole Brown tossed a shovel pass to Melton who raced 77 yards for McKenzie’s first touchdown. A 2-point conversion pass was good for an 8-2 Rebel lead with 2:00 left in the second quarter.
 
McKenzie forced Henderson into 3 plays and out in a short period of time. Henderson punted to McKenzie with 1:17 left until halftime. The Rebels struck paydirt two plays later with Jacobi Melton scampering 33 yards for a touchdown with 40 seconds to play. The two point conversion was good for a 16-2 score which was the halftime score.
 
After halftime, Jacobi Melton took the kickoff at the 11-yard line and took it to the house for an 89-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. The 2-point conversion was good for a 24-2 lead just seconds into the third quarter. A Cole Brown interception ended Henderson’s next possession with the Rebels getting the ball at the Henderson 32. McKenzie got into the endzone a few plays later but fumbled it to Henderson on a touchback.
 
The Rebel defense forced a punt where they got the ball near midfield and wasted no time rolling into Henderson territory but turned it over on downs on the first play of the fourth quarter. After the two teams swapped possessions, McKenzie’s Jacobi Melton struck again with a 64-yard interception for a touchdown. The two-point conversion was no good increasing the Rebel lead to 30-2 which ended up being the final score.
 
McKenzie improves to 3-0 and will host Huntingdon on Thursday, September 15.
