Mustangs Win Sixth Straight

Posted
HUNTINGDON (October 30) — The offense and defense of Huntingdon worked like a well-oiled machine Friday night as they easily handled the Gibson County Pioneers 50-6 in the Region 7-2A match-up. The Mustangs picked up their sixth straight win of the season and moved to 6-1 on the regular season and 3-0 in the region.

Huntingdon won the coin toss and deferred to the second half. Gibson County went three and out on the opening drive.
After fielding the punt, the Mustangs took over near mid-field. In seven plays, Ashton Hutcherson scored Huntingdon’s first touchdown from four yards out. Cole Chafin added the extra point giving Huntingdon a 7-0 lead.

Gibson County’s second possession ended in a punt as Huntingdon took over at their 30-yard line. A 12-yard run and 28-yard reception by Braxton Montes De Oca put the Mustangs in four-down territory. On first-and-ten from the 30-yard line, Gray Eubanks teamed up with Montes De Oca for a 30-yard touchdown. Chafin’s PAT was good as Huntingdon led 14-0 with 4:56 to play in the first quarter.

The Pioneers failed to pick up a first down on their next possession. Brady Warbritton fielded the punt and returned it 45 yards for a touchdown. The extra point was no good and the Mustangs lead increased to 20-0.

The second quarter opened with Eubanks and Elijah Flowers picking up a passing touchdown followed by Hutcherson adding a two-point conversion. Huntingdon led 28-0.

Gibson County was buried deep in their territory to start the next drive. On second-and-twelve from the Pioneer two-yard line,  Easton Byars recorded a sack in the end-zone giving Huntingdon two points for the safety, securing a second-half running clock with the 30-lead.

The Mustang offense and defense continued to dominate as Huntingdon picked up 20 additional points before the end of the first half with offensive scores by Warbritton and Elijah Flowers and a pick-six interception by C.J. Pelonero. Chafin added two-extra points for a halftime score of 50-0.

The second half opened with Huntingdon making a series of substitutions that lasted throughout the game. With a running clock and an officiating crew looking to keep the game moving, the region 7-2A game quickly drew to a close. Gibson County would score its only points of the night on a short run from eight yards out following a Mustang turnover. Huntingdon’s defense prevented the Pioneers from picking up first down during the game. The final score was Huntingdon 50 Gibson County 6.

Next week Huntingdon begins a tedious stretch of games that include games against Westview, Peabody and Union City all three of which have a chance to make deep playoff runs. Friday night’s game against Westview (5-2) is senior night for the Mustangs as it is their last home stand of the season. The Region 7-2A matchup kicks off at 7 p.m.
