Pillowville Community Builds Helipad

PILLOWVILLE (September 5) — The hard work of the residents of the Pillowville Community, between McKenzie and Greenfield, paid off recently when the first patient was transported from the brand-new helipad.
Derek Galey, a volunteer with the Pillowville Rural Fire Department, said Tuesday, September 3, a community resident in respiratory distress was airlifted from the community-funded helipad.
It was a community effort to install a helipad. It is located on S&S Farms near the intersection of State Route 124 and 190.

Galey said phase 1 was a 40-foot by 40-foot concrete pad, some six to 12 inches thick and built to the standards established by AirEvac. It also has a six-foot by 25-foot sidewalk to the pad. The copter landed and had plenty of room to spare on the pad, said Galey.
The community raised $7,000 through a raffle for a shotgun for the first phase. Phase two includes a windsock, painting, and lighting. AirEvac plans to donate the lighting.
A second fundraiser is a yard sale on September 13 and 14 at the Pillowville Fire Department. It begins each day at 7 a.m.
Galey said the medical helicopters previously had to land in a flat grassy area that was clear of overhead power lines and trees. The local first responders previously had to establish a makeshift landing zone for the helicopter. The new pad eliminates the need for a makeshift landing zone. Firefighters still dispatch a fire apparatus to the helipad as a safety precaution.
