Playoff Picture Getting Clearer

Posted
The Class A State Bracket is starting to clear up as the end of the regular season nears. The TSSAA football bracket alternates each year on purpose. The region winner automatically gets the first two playoff games at home. The region runner-up gets the first game at home and the next game on the road. The third and fourth rounds alternate each year. For example, McKenzie hosted Moore County and Cornersville in the first two rounds last year. Round 3 was on the road at Fayetteville while the semifinal was at home against Trenton. This year, the Rebels very well may have the first three playoff games at home. Let’s have a sneak peek at what could happen when the playoffs start on November 4.

McKenzie
The Rebels are first in Region 6A and will host the first two rounds at home. The opening playoff game is looking like Wayne County or Eagleville. Round 2 is looking like either Moore County or a rematch with Gleason if they defeat Moore County in Round 1. Round 3 could be a rematch with Fayetteville at home or a rematch with Dresden also at home unless playoff upsets occur. The Black Friday semifinal will be on the road likely against the winner between Trenton and MASE (Memphis Arts and Sciences). Don’t forget upsets can occur so keep an eye on Halls and Lake County.

Gleason
You can count on one thing from Gleason and that is they will give everything they’ve got in every game. Their third place region finish is due to their upset of McEwen at home two weeks ago and taking care of business down the stretch. They likely will pay Moore County a visit for the first round. If they should pull the upset over Moore County, then they will likely face a rematch with the McKenzie Rebels.

West Carroll
The War Eagles are in a tough spot. They likely will finish fourth in their region and travel to Memphis Arts and Sciences for the first round of the playoffs. If they upset MASE (Memphis Arts and Sciences) but then they would face either Lake County or Booker T Washington in Round 2. If West Carroll survives the first two rounds they will probably face either Trenton or Halls in round 3 if there are no first round upsets. If the War Eagles manage to fight their way into the semifinals they won’t have to go far to face McKenzie for the right to go to Chattanooga.

Huntingdon
The Mustangs will have played Trenton at Trenton and face Union City at their place this week. They are looking at finishing second or third in their region depending on the outcome at Union City. If they beat Union City, they will face either Oakhaven or Memphis KIPP at home and travel for the second round to Memphis. I’m sure Mustang fans have not forgotten that 8-7 heartbreaker in Memphis last year.

If they lose to Union City and finish third, they will likely travel to Freedom Prep or Memphis Fairley to start the playoffs. The rest of Huntingdon’s playoff matchups will depend on what happens in this last couple of weeks of the regular season. If the Mustangs survive round one, they potentially could see rematches against Westview, Union City, and Riverside depending on how long they survive in the playoffs.
