Rebels Cruise by Mustangs, Tigers Stun War Eagles in Barn-Burner

McKENZIE (February 20) — The District 11A Boys Basketball Tournament continued Thursday at Bethel University’s Crisp Arena with a pair of semifinal contests.

First, the McKenzie Rebels outscored the Huntingdon Mustangs in each quarter to build a comfortable lead and coast to a 76-44 win.

Then, the Hollow Rock-Bruceton Central Tigers overcame an early deficit to lead the West Carroll War Eagles by a point at the half. West Carroll rallied to take the lead out of the break, and the game was back-and-forth down the stretch. Central led by as much as seven in the fourth, but the War Eagles rallied again to tie the contest at 59-59 with two minutes to play. The Tigers scored the final four points in the waning seconds to claim a 63-59 victory.

The Rebels and Tigers would meet in the championship game Saturday; the Mustangs and War Eagles would battle for third. All four teams advance to the Region 6A Tournament.

McKenzie Rebels 76, Huntingdon Mustangs 44

The Rebels led 16-6 after the first frame on four points each from Lucas King, Lane Horton, Micah Austin and Caleb Gill. Mustang Drake Butler scored three points, Ben Taylor had a pair, and Kieyren Jordan hit a free throw.

McKenzie added to the lead with a 21-12 advantage in the second quarter, led by King with ten points, including a pair of three-pointers. Lazarick Hill scored four points, Austin hit a three, and Horton and Evan Jarrett each had a pair. Grant Bartholomew led Huntingdon with four points. Noah Belew hit a three, and Butler also scored three points. Taylor added a pair. At the half, McKenzie led 37-18.

The Rebels pulled away with a 20-13 tilt in the third, led by King with nine points, including a pair of threes. Hill scored seven with a three, Austin had three points, and Jarrett hit a free throw. Butler led the Mustangs with six points, including a three. Bartholomew scored five, and Taylor added a pair. Entering the final frame, the Rebels led 57-31.

McKenzie capped the win with a 19-13 swing in the fourth, led by Witt Mitchum with six points. Nate Whitsell scored four. Hill, Jarrett, Austin and Marquez Taylor each had a pair, and Eli Surber hit a free throw. Jordan and Jeb Atkinson each hit a three-pointer for Huntingdon, and Butler also scored three points. Bartholomew and Will Nellett each had a pair.

Rebel Lucas King led all scorers with 23 points, including four three-pointers. Lazarick Hill scored 13 with a three, and Micah Austin had a dozen, also with a three.

Drake Butler led the Mustangs with 15 points, including a three. Grant Bartholomew scored eleven points.

Central Tigers 63, West Carroll War Eagles 59

West Carroll had a 17-10 lead after the opening frame, led by Tyler Johnson with six points on a pair of three-pointers. Jalen Anglin scored four, and Jed Robinson hit a three. Luke Moore and Jeremiah Bryant each had a pair. Brayden Frye led Central with five points. Mason Binkley hit a three, and Davion Harris had a pair.

The Tigers took a halftime lead with a 20-12 advantage in the second quarter, led by Binkley with 15 points, including four three-pointers. Harris also hit a three, and Justin Haskins had a pair. Moore led the War Eagles with eight points, including a three. Anglin and Josh Clark each had a pair. At the break, the Tigers led 30-29.

Central had a 16-13 edge in the third, led by Binkley with seven points, including a three. Frye scored five with a three, and Gage Lowry had four points. Moore and Clark led West Carroll with four points each. Bryant scored three points, and Anglin added a pair. Heading into the final frame, the Tigers led 46-42.

The fourth was a 17-17 wash. Binkley led Central with six points, including a three-pointer. Haskins scored five with a three, and Frye, Lowry and Harris each added a pair. Moore led the War Eagles with seven points. Anglin and Clark each scored four, and Bryant added a pair.

Tiger Mason Binkley led all scorers with 31 points, including seven three-pointers. Brayden Frye scored a dozen with a three.

Luke Moore led West Carroll with 21 points, including a three. Jalen Anglin scored a dozen, and Josh Clark had ten points.
