Rebels Defeat Big Sandy

McKENZIE (February 14) - The McKenzie Rebels defeated the Big Sandy Red Devils 79-60 in the District 11-1A semifinals. The Rebels took a three-point lead during the first quarter and held their lead throughout the game.

The Red Devils chalked up 15 points in the first quarter. Seth Green had seven points. Keegan Staggs drove to the basket for four points. Blake Sims and Cole Pierpoint had two points each.

McKenzie had 18 points in the first quarter. Zay Webber chalked up six points. Tate Surber had four points in the paint and two points from the foul line. Bryson Steele knocked down two free throws. Marquez Taylor tacked on one point from the line. Carter Kee drained a 3-pointer. The Rebels lead 18-15 at the end of the first quarter.

The Red Devils were held to seven points in the second quarter. Green had five points. Sims drove to the basket for two points.

The Rebels added another 18 points to their lead. Zach Aird and Taylor had two points each. Steele had four points in the paint. Hayden Garrett made a shot from beyond the arc. Tate Surber had three points, and Webber had four points. McKenzie held a 36-22 lead over Big Sandy at halftime. 

The Red Devils had 16 points in the third quarter. Braxton Wright made a 3-pointer. Dalton Barnes came off the bench and had two points. Green drained a 3-pointer. Staggs drove to the basket for two points. Pierpoint chalked up six points during the quarter.

The Rebels added 23 points to their lead. Kee and Garrett had three points each. Surber chalked up four points. Steele tacked on two points in the paint. Aird made a 3-pointer and knocked down a free throw. Taylor had seven points. He drove to the basket drawing a foul for two shots at the line, then had an and 1 in the paint. He then drove to the basket for another two points. McKenzie led 59-38 going into the final quarter.

Green’s three-point shooting carried the Red Devils in the fourth quarter, he had 15 points from beyond the arc. Pierpoint had four points in the paint. Staggs tacked on two free throws, and Sims tacked on one.

McKenzie secured their win with a 20-point quarter. Webber and Surber had five points each. Steele and Taylor chalked up two points each. Stafford Roditis drained a 3-pointer. Carter Kee made two free throws. Drew Chappell tacked on one free throw. The Rebels defeated the Red Devils 79-60.

The McKenzie Rebels advance to the District 11-1A Championship which will be held at Bethel University’s Crisp Arena on Friday, Feb. 17. Tip-off is at approximately 8:30.
