Rebels Defeat War Eagles For Region Title

ATWOOD — McKenzie’s Rebels had a tall order on their plate containing West Carroll’s Jalen Anglin and matching their athletic team but they were up to the task. Anglin started the scoring with a three-pointer and got fouled on the shot. The free-throw made it a 4-0 game very early but after the Rebels scored to cut the lead in half 4-2, the two teams struggled for points until the latter half of the period. The Rebels outgunned the War Eagles 14-8 in the last half of the period to hold a 16-12 lead at the end of the period.

Both teams battled in the second period to a 29-29 tie by halftime. In the third period, both teams went back and forth swapping leads with the Rebels taking a 43-40 lead by the end of the period. West Carroll tied it 43-43 with a three-pointer just seconds into the final period. It was tied again 47-47 with six minutes left before the Rebels took a 54-49 lead with two minutes left and fended off the War Eagles to get the win 59-51. The final score was the largest lead in the game.

McKenzie’s Marquez Taylor played a huge game getting tough baskets at critical points in the game and led all scorers with 21 points. Senior Zayden McCaslin also had a big game with 15 points hitting a number of free throws. Bryson Steele was in double figures with 10 points while Tate Surber had eight points. Stafford Roditis had four points and Zach Aird chipped in a point for the Rebels.

Jalen Anglin led West Carroll with 16 points while Xander Moon and Josh Clark added 11 and 10 points respectively. JaQuan Adkins and Andrew Huff had seven points each for the War Eagles.

McKenzie will host Richland in substate action while West Carroll travels to Santa Fe. Both games will be Monday night, March 7 at 7 p.m.

Following the game, the All-Region Boys team was announced. They included Perry County’s Gunner Bradford, Houston County’s Hunter Cronwell, West Carroll’s Jalen Anglin and Josh Clark, McKenzie’s Bryson Steele and Zayden McCaslin while the Region MVP was Marquez Taylor.
