Rebels Defeat West Carroll

ATWOOD — McKenzie’s Rebels traveled down the road to another Carroll County rival at West Carroll and came home with a nice 30-12.

West Carroll took the ball first and didn’t fare well with it giving it up to McKenzie in a hurry. 

The Rebels went to work with runs and short passes and got on the scoreboard first with a three-yard touchdown pass from Evan Jarrett to Logan Lyles. The extra point was no good leaving McKenzie with a 6-0 lead with 5:04 left in the first quarter.

The two teams swapped three-and-out possessions to close the first quarter with the Rebels holding a lead.

The second quarter opened with the War Eagles punting and McKenzie got the ball in good field position at the West Carroll 37. A few plays later the drive stalled and on 4th and 8. Levin Adrum connected on a 36-yard field goal to extend the Rebels lead to 9-0 with 9:55 remaining in the second quarter.

West Carroll got a decent return on the kickoff starting from their own 31 and got big runs from Jarrius Weatherford and Jeremiah Bryant to go deep into Rebel territory and scored on a 14-yard touchdown run by Bryant with 6:50 left in the first half. A 2-point conversion pass failed leaving the Rebels in the lead 9-6.

McKenzie missed a field goal attempt but forced a War Eagle punt with just under three minutes to play. This time the Rebels drove the ball and scored with just 28 seconds left in the half on a 9-yard touchdown pass from Jarrett to Lyles, their second of the game. Adrums extra point attempt was good for a 16-6 McKenzie lead at halftime.

The Rebels took the second half kickoff getting good field position from their own 40. Three plays later Jarrett connected with Marquez Taylor on a 49-yard touchdown pass with 9:01 to play in the third quarter. Adrum nailed the point after for a 23-6 Rebel lead.

West Carroll started their next drive with positive plays but penalties and a Rebel sack forced them to punt.

The Rebels got the ball at their own 31 beginning another drive that rolled over into the fourth quarter resulting in a 10-yard touchdown run by Marquez Taylor with 11:06 to play in the contest. 

Adrums kick was good for a 30-6 lead.

The War Eagles put together a long drive after McKenzie’s last score that resulted in a four-yard touchdown run by Xander Moon with 2:04 left to play. Their 2-point conversion failed leaving the score 30-12 in the Rebels favor.

McKenzie brought out younger players to run out the clock on the game handing McKenzie their first win of the young season. The Rebels are on the road again this week to Trenton Peabody while West Carroll plays host to Humboldt.
