Rebels Drop Season Finale in Overtime to Cardinals

ADAMSVILLE (October 30) — On Friday night, the McKenzie Rebels closed the regular season on the road against the Adamsville Cardinals. The Region 7AA match-up went down to the wire as the Cardinals won 23-17 in overtime.
Statistically, the Rebels overpowered the Cardinals but three turnovers proved costly for the visiting team. McKenzie ran 62 plays picking up 286 offensive yards while they held Adamsville to 67 plays for 170 yards. The Rebels rushed for passed for 153 yards and carried the ball for 133 yards. Adamsville had 92 yards by air and 78 on the ground. McKenzie had 12 first downs to Adamsville’s 11.
McKenzie Quarterback Jackson Cassidy was 9 for 21 passing with 2 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. The two passing touchdowns were caught by Will Latimer (76 yards receiving) and Marquez Taylor (64-yards receiving). Adamsville’s Lathan Morris was 6 for 27 picking up 3 touchdowns. The Rebel running game was led by Taylor with 15 carries for 119 yards followed by Caleb McWherter with 12 for 23 yards.
The Rebel defensive was led by Rashad McCreary with 9 tackles, Logan Lyles and Kaden Allen with three tackles and Brandon Boaz with three tackles and a sack.
With less than seven minutes to play in the first quarter, the Rebels trailed the Cardinals 7-0 with Morris’ 34-yard touchdown pass and a successful extra-point attempt. Adamsville scored a second touchdown putting the Cardinals up 14-0.
The second quarter went more in favor of McKenzie. As Adamsville went up 17-0, the Rebels scored 17 unanswered points.

Cassidy teamed with Latimer for a 55-yard touchdown followed by a successful PAT. The second touchdown was from
Cassidy to Taylor from 32 yards out with Zach Aird’s second PAT.
The third quarter was scoreless. In the fourth quarter, the Rebels tied the score at 17-17 with a 20-yard field goal from Aird. The remainder of the quarter was a back-and-forth between McKenzie and Adamsville.
In overtime, Adamsville regained the lead 23-17 with very little time remaining. The Rebels worked the ball down the field but were unable to score as the horn sounded.
The Rebels finish the regular season with a 7-3 record with wins over Huntingdon, Halls, Gibson County, Dresden and Obion County along with a win over West Carroll who was forced to forfeit due to COVID-19. McKenzie finished second in the region suffering losses to region champions, Trenton Peabody, and Adamsville. Their third loss of the season was to the University School of Jackson (USJ) who was a mid-season replaced for Stewart County.
Going into the TSSAA playoffs, the McKenzie Rebels and Adamsville Cardinals earned first-round byes due to Region 8AA not playing football this season. The second round will pit the Rebels and Cardinals against each other in a rematch. According to the TSSAA brackets, the #2 seeded Rebels will host the #4 seeded Cardinals on November 13 with kickoff set for 7 p.m. The winner will host the winner of the Trenton/Union City game.
