McKENZIE (May 18, 2023) -  McKenzie Rebels baseball team is returning to Murfreesboro to compete in the Class 1A state championship tournament. The first game is Tuesday, May 23, 4 p.m. at Rockvale against University School JC.
In the substate double-header against the Richland Raiders at McKenzie, the Rebels claimed a 5-2 victory in the first contest and a 12-6 victory in the second to punch their ticket to Murfreesboro.
The 2022 campaign ended as state runner-up in Murfreesboro, playing the final game on a Sunday afternoon after a week of heavy rains caused game delays.
In the first of two games against Richland on Thursday, May 18, McKenzie scored one in the first and second innings, two in the fourth and one in the sixth for five total points. McKenzie had eight hits. Jackson Cassidy had two RBI, Hayden Hixson two, and Tate Surber 1.
Richland scored one in the second and fifth innings for two points.

Tate Surber was the winning pitcher for the Rebels with Hayden Hixson pitching in the seventh inning.
McKenzie’s Jackson Cassidy and Tate Surber recorded a homerun in the championship game, and Lane Anderson had a double.
McKenzie scored two in the first inning, two in the fourth, eight in the sixth for a total of 12.
Richland scored four in the second, one in the third and one in the fourth for a total of six.
Jackson Cassidy was the starting pitcher with Lane Anderson coming in to finish the contest.
Runs were scored by: Jackson Cassidy 2, Hayden Hixson 3, Ty Anderson 1, Tate Surber 2, Jake Cassidy 1, Braden Birmingham 1 and Hayden Garrett 2.
