Stay Strong, Stay Healthy Program at McKenzie Senior Citizens Center

Posted
The Stay Strong, Stay Healthy program is based on the results of extensive scientific strength training research studies conducted with middle-aged and older adults. The research found that strength training can help increase muscle strength, improve balance, enhance flexibility, strengthen bones, relieve arthritis, help manage weight, lift depression, reduce stress, and reduce the risk of heart disease.

Stay Strong, Stay Healthy is a free eight-week (16 session) exercise program for older and sedentary middle-aged adults. The goal of this evidence-based program is to improve health and quality of life through strength training.

Classes include warm-up exercises, simple strengthening exercises with or without weights and cool-down stretches. Classes meet for one hour, twice a week. A day of rest is scheduled between exercise classes. Participants are encouraged to do the exercises on their own one other time during the week.

Classes are Mondays and Wednesdays at 8 a.m. at the McKenzie Senior Citizens Center, 172 Main Street S. Classes begin July 18 and end September 7.

Over the eight weeks, participants learn the exercises and begin to improve strength and balance. After eight weeks, participants are encouraged to continue this effective program at home or with a community group.

The program includes the use of ankle and hand weights, which are provided while in class. Participants are encouraged to purchase weights for use at home, if desired. A voluntary fitness assessment is conducted prior to the first class and at the end of the program.

The Stay Strong, Stay Healthy program accepts fifteen participants maximum, and all ages are accepted.
