Tennessee Gas Tax Increased July 1

Posted

Tennessee motorists experienced a one-cent increase in the motor vehicle tax on July 1, thanks to the approval of the IMPROVE Act passed in 2017 under the Haslam administration and the Republican-led General Assembly. Overall, the Act called for gasoline to be increased by six cents per gallon and diesel by 10 cents over a three-year period.
State Taxes are $0.20 per gallon until June 30, 2017, $0.24 from July 1, 2017 to June 30, 2018, $0.25 from July 1, 2018 to June 30, 2019, $0.26 from July 1, 2019 and after.
Diesel $0.17 per gallon until June 30, 2017, $0.21 from July 1, 2017 to June 30, 2018, $0.24 from July 1, 2018 to June 30, 2019, $0.27 from July 1, 2019 and after.
To help balance out those tax hikes, the state portion of sales taxes on groceries decreased from 5 percent to 4 percent. That means for every $100 spent on groceries, shoppers saved $1 on taxes.
