HUNTINGDON – Three candidates are seeking the nomination to fill the vacancy of chancellor of the 24th Judicial District, including Benton, Carroll, Henry, Decatur and Hardin counties.

During a Carroll County Republican Party caucus on Tuesday, October 29, at the Huntingdon Police Station, Vance Dennis of Savannah, Vicki Hoover of Paris, and Brent Bradberry of McKenzie announced they are seeking the nomination. Each gave a brief talk about their qualifications.

Dennis is a former state representative (2008-2014) and an assistant district attorney working in Hardin County.

Bradberry is an assistant district public defender for the 27th Judicial District. He was previously in private law practice and the furniture manufacturing business before attending law school. He recently resigned his position as chairman of the county Republican Party.

Hoover and her husband operate a private law practice known as Ainley, Hoover and Hoover in Paris.

Additional candidates can still seek the position ahead of the five-county convention caucus on November 23.

During the county caucus, 66 “bona fide” Republicans attended the Tuesday caucus. To be bona fide, one must have voted in at least three of the last four Republican primaries. Another 16 Republicans, who were unable to attend requested to be delegates. Eleven of those were selected (five of whom will be alternatives).

The vacancy was created when Chancellor Carma McGee was appointed by Governor Bill Lee to serve on the Court of Appeals. Three candidates were selected by the Trial Vacancy Commission on Tuesday, June 25. Those three were Bradberry, Dennis, and Jennifer King, whose names were advanced to Governor Bill Lee.

Lee appointed Jennifer King of Huntingdon to fill the seat until the next regular election. King resigned citing the Republican decided to change from a primary to a caucus in selecting their candidate. Circuit Court judges Donald Parish and Creed McGinley, both Democrats, are serving the court in the interim.

The Democrats will select a candidate to seek the office. Independent candidates can also seek the chancellorship.
