ATWOOD (August 21) — The West Carroll War Eagles suffered a season-opening loss 14-8 to Fayette Academy in overtime on Friday, August 21.
At the end of regulation, the score was tied 8-8 with both teams only scoring in the fourth quarter. Fayette Academy’s quarterback Luke Moore scored in second down to put the Vikings up by six. An attempt to tack on extra points fell short after War Eagle Hunter Lindsey made the stop.
An overtime attempt by West Carroll pushed the ball to the one-yard line, a failed snap ended the series and ballgame.
Both teams play under the TSSAA regulation, which prohibited much of the pre-season practice and no scrimmages because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The audience was limited in attendance because of the virus. Every visitor entering the stadium had their body temperature checked with touchless thermometers.
West Carroll was under the field command of Xander Moon, a junior quarterback.
After a West Carroll kickoff, the Vikings had the first series, earning two first downs and scoring a touchdown that was negated by a holding penalty. The series ended with a West Carroll interception.
West Carroll went three and out on their first possession followed by the Vikings’ four and out.
Tyler Shaddon earned the War Eagles a first down and along with help from QB Moon before the series ended with a Vikings interception.
The Vikings earned a first down and moved to West Carroll’s 27 yard line to end the first quarter.
West Carroll pressured the Vikings forcing an incomplete pass on second down and a quarterback sack on third down forcing the Vikings to punt it away on fourth.
Deven Rader gained six yards on the first down, but the War Eagles’ action was stymied with a penalty and a fumble on third down. The team punted on fourth to mid-field.
The Vikings marched down field with two first downs before a fumble ended the series.
Xander Moon threw two incomplete passes before a third landed in the hands of Jack Barrow to earn the team a new set of downs. Rader, and Moom rushed for another first, and the possession ended with a punt from the Vikings’ 42 yard line.
The Vikings earned three first downs and moved to their own 41 yard line before punting. West Carroll had one more possession to end the scoreless first half.
The Vikings started the second half with two first downs ending the series at West Carroll’s 31 yard line The War Eagles made good use of the possession, moving the ball on runs by Deven Rader, Tyler Shaddon, Moon, and a pass to Jack Barrow, earning five first downs and exhausting the clock on the third quarter. A pass on the first play to Jacob Blankenship in the final quarter netted the War Eagles their first touchdown, and Tyler Shaddon punched in two points to make the score 8-0 with 11:52 remaining in the contest.
The Vikings earned four first downs and moved to West Carroll’s one yard line before fumbling, giving the War Eagles possession at the two-yard line. Xander Moon moved the ball eight yards on first down before the remainder of the possession failed to produce needed yardage and led to a West Carroll punt.
The Vikings were soon in pay dirt on a Tanner Howell touchdown with 3:27 remaining in the quarter. A pass netted the extra two to tie the game.
West Carroll’s next possession ended in a three and out. The Vikings had the ball at mid-field at the end of regulation and sent the game into overtime.
Next week, the War Eagles travel to McKenzie. Kickoff is 7 p.m.
