ATWOOD — The West Carroll School Board gave school director Dexter Williams a three-year contract extension with a 4-2 vote. The motion was that the contract of the director of schools be renewed for three years beginning July 1, 2020 until June 30, 2023 keeping all benefits listed in the existing contract. A motion by Nancy Johnson to delay the vote until next month failed prior to the vote to extend the contract. Johnson’s reasoning for the delay was because she had not seen William’s contract. A roll call vote was held with Mike Foster, Kyle Foster, Misty Mitchell and William Robinson all voting yes while Nancy Johnson and Patrick Lindsey voted no to the contract extension.
The board voted in favor of a bonus for the system’s employees. They first voted to give the bonus despite the fact it was not budgeted and then voted to spend slightly over $125,000 so the take-home bonus would be $500 per employee. Board members also approved a budget amendment allowing for the bonus expenditure.
Director Dexter Williams recommended an upgrade to the security cameras at West Carroll Elementary school. Williams described them as being in bad shape and it would take approximately $6,000 to upgrade the camera system. The board approved Williams’ recommendation and noted they would also look into upgrading the primary school camera system in the near future.
In other action, board members approved Big E’s Sealcoating out of three bids to reseal the Junior High/Senior High School parking lot at a cost of $24,386.
A number of board policy updates were approved on first reading. A board policy update regarding nepotism sponsored by Patrick Lindsey failed to generate any discussion or a motion.
West Carroll Elementary Beta Club sponsors Brittany Fowler and Michelle Robinson were spotlighted along with the Girl’s Cross Country Team which won their first trophies this year including a Region Championship and qualified for the State Cross Country meet. West Carroll’s Marching Band was also spotlighted for all their achievements including a top ten finish in the state competition and the field commander placed first at state. The band was in attendance at the meeting and played some of their music for the board and audience.
Prior to adjourning, Director Dexter Williams thanked the board for their vote of confidence and noted that December 13, the school system would honor the late Richard Welch, who coached West Carroll’s girls for a number of years.
