West Carroll School Board Honors Winchester

Posted
ATWOOD – The monthly session was started with the approval of the agenda and the consent agenda which included approval of the March meeting minutes and the resignation of LeAnn Edwards.  Edwards taught Art and Journalism while being the yearbook sponsor.

The West Carroll School Board honored Janet Winchester for 33 years of service to the West Carroll School System early in the monthly meeting on Thursday, April 7.  After a round of applause, Winchester responded saying, “I’m very appreciative and thank you all for your friendship through the years.”  She was awarded a glass trophy honoring her 33 years.

The school board approved a bid on two SSO (School Safety Officer) vehicles from Ford of Murfreesboro which will not cost the system any out of pocket money.  Director Preston Caldwell told the board that the purchase was written into the ESSER (Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund) Plan and approved by the state.  The vehicles are both SUV’s priced at $35,998 each.

In another matter, Director Caldwell informed the board there had been a request earlier in the year regarding flashing speed signs from within the school system.  He advised the process through the state would take up to two years but the school system had ‘Safe School Funds’ left over that needed to be spent or lose it. After finding out he could purchase the flashers with those funds, Caldwell got four bids with GMC being the low bidder at slightly over $16,000.  The board approved unanimously.  The flashers would be used primarily at the Primary and Elementary schools in McLemoresville and Trezevant.

A request was approved by the board for a Prom Prep Field Trip for students. Only one reading was needed for this action to be taken.

During Director Caldwell’s updates to the board, he noted that there were approxamately 30 days left of school.  He announced Linda Black had been awarded a $5,000 STEM Classroom grant.  There were 300 applicants with Black being a finalist.  The school system’s COVID update revealed no COVID positives and no one quarantined as of April 7.  Caldwell also announced 500 new Chromebook laptops had recently been received through an ECF (Emergency Connectivity Fund) which fully funded the laptops.

After Caldwell’s announcements, the meeting was adjourned until the May meeting.
