West Carroll School Board Meeting

ATWOOD (May 2) — West Carroll’s Board of Education met in their final meeting last Thursday before school lets out later this month.
After approving the consent agenda which included approval of $750 yearbook supplements for the yearbook sponsors along with resignations from David Hale and Adam Welch, the board approved an ACA Insurance Resolution with little discussion.
They also approved a Disciplinary Hearing Authority Committee which includes principals Jackie Wester, Tracy Foster, and Tim Stratton along with Shane DePriest, Regina Alred and Dana Carey.
They heard a presentation from Mandy Drewry and Jennifer Medford with Coordinated School Health regarding screenings they had done in the West Carroll Schools plus events that Coordinated School Health had done during the school year. Out of 118 students screened at West Carroll Primary School this year 56 were in Kindergarten and the others in 2nd grade.
In Kindergarten, 35 were found to be healthy, 9 found to be overweight and 12 found to be obese. Those found to be overweight or obese accounted for 21 students or slightly over 37% of the group screened. Out of 62 second graders, 1 was considered underweight, 26 found to be healthy, 10 found to be overweight and 23 found to be obese.
The group found to be overweight and/or obese totaled 33 students or 53% of the second graders screened.
In the West Carroll Elementary School, 49 4th graders and 59 6th graders were screened for a total of 108 students. Two fourth graders were found to be underweight, 23 found to be healthy, 11 overweight and 13 obese. The total overweight or obese accounted for 24 students or 48.9% of the group.

In 6th grade, 26 were found to be healthy, 13 were overweight, and 20 obese. 33 students were in the overweight or obese groups totaling nearly 56% of the sixth graders screened.
Coordinated School Health sponsored a Carroll County Teen Summit where freshmen from all five special school districts converged on the Carroll County Civic Center to hear speakers discuss bullying and the effects on students.
They also sponsored a 10-week staff fitness challenge for all five school districts. West Carroll’s Paul Acuff came in first place in the fitness challenge.
Other action items addressed during the meeting included approving the 2019-2020 school supply lists, approving the second reading of TSBA’s board policy updates to Section 5 and the first reading of TSBA’s board policy updates to Section 6. Board members approved the recently completed Five-Year Strategic Plan for the West Carroll School System and also approved the second reading of FCCLA’s request to attend the FCCLA National Convention Trip to Anaheim, California June 30-July 4, 2019.
Schools Director Dexter Williams recommended three teachers for tenure which also included waiving a two-year probationary period for two of them. P.E. teacher Titus Taylor, Elementary English teacher Kim Allen and High School Spanish teacher Kim Harvey. The board unanimously granted tenure to all three instructors.
All three principals updated the board and audience on their schools finishing up the annual standardized testing periods and assorted events taking place as the school year winds down. Director Williams advised boardmembers that the school system will continue the summer feeding program which includes breakfast and lunch. It will take place four days a week at the West Carroll Primary School from June 3 – 27th and at West Carroll Jr/Sr High School from May 22 – June 27. He also advised the school system received a “Read To Be Ready” grant for a summer reading program to be held at the primary school.
The next meeting was announced to be June 6, 2019.
