McKENZIE, Tenn. - Funeral services for David Wendell Scates are Saturday, May 4, 2024, at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church Trezevant. The family will receive friends at the church on Saturday from 11 a.m. until service time. Interment will follow at Union Academy Cemetery, McKenzie.

Mr. Scates, 80, died Wednesday, May 1, 2024, at his residence. He was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on March 18, 1944, to Fleetwood B. Sr. and Alma Louise Harrington Scates.

He graduated from Trezevant High School in 1962 and is a U.S. Navy Veteran who served his country in the Vietnam War in the Seabees. He gave his life to Christ on August 4, 1954, and was baptized in Presley’s Lake. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Trezevant and served as the Sunday School Director for many years.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Mary Edna McCaig Scates, two daughters, Teressia Tidwell (Doug) and Melanie Herndon (TJ), one sister, Linda Faulkner, a brother, Lester Scates and five grandchildren, David Hensley (Krista), Melanie Tidwell King (Michael), Brooke Gullett, (Cody), Kilee Tidwell and Hunter “Drake” Herndon, five great-grandchildren, Ridgelynn Hensley, Hayden Wingo, Daniel King, Eli Gullett and Maycee Gullett and several nieces and nephews and cousins.
