McKENZIE (February 1) — McKenzie High School’s basketball teams held Senior Night Friday as they hosted Greenfield in their final home games of the season. The defending state champion Lady Yellowjackets pulled away early en route to a 73-48 win over the Lady Rebels. The Rebels had a slim lead at the half, then dominated the third quarter to earn a 66-46 victory.
Between games, McKenzie’s senior basketball players, managers and cheerleaders were recognized on the court with parents and other family members.
Senior Rebels include Ben Austin, Brandon Hobson, Tyler Spivey and manager Stephone Haynes.
Senior Lady Rebels include La’Jada Edmonson, Mi’Kayla Gill, Macey Ognibene, Tayla Stubbs and managers Julie French and Jazmin Ventura.
Senior cheerleaders include Haven Hargrove, Marisa Nunnery and Kristen Taylor.
Greenfield Lady Yellowjackets 73, McKenzie Lady Rebels 48
The Lady Yellowjackets jumped out to a 24-9 lead after the opening frame, led by Chloe Moore-McNeil with eleven points, including a three-pointer. Edie Darby scored eight with a pair of threes, and Tess Darby had five, also with a three. Lady Rebel Anna Callahan scored five points, Mi’Kayla Gill and Dani Dyer each had a pair, and Macey Ognibene hit a free throw.
Greenfield extended the lead with a 23-14 advantage in the second quarter. Moore-McNeil led again with a dozen, including another three. T. Darby scored eleven with a trio of three-pointers. Whitley Smith led McKenzie with five points, including a three, and Savannah Nesbitt scored four. Gill and Callahan each added a pair, and Lilly Bennett hit a free throw. At the half, the Lady Yellowjackets led 47-23.
The Lady Yellowjackets outscored the Lady Rebels 17-9 in the third. Moore-McNeil scored eight with a pair of threes, and Caroline Crouse also hit a three. T. Darby, E. Darby and Mattie Winberry each had a pair. Shelby Davis led McKenzie with four points. Camille Travis hit a three-pointer, and Gill added a pair. Entering the final frame, Greenfield led 64-36.
The Lady Rebels rallied 16-9 in the fourth for a closer final score, led by Bennett with five points, including a three-pointer. Smith scored three points, and Gill, Davis, Ognibene and La’Jada Edmonson each had a pair. Lady Yellowjacket Reese Biggs scored five points with a three, and E. Darby and Hannah Brown each had a pair.
Lady Yellowjacket Chloe Moore-McNeil led all scorers with 31 points, including four three-pointers. Tess Darby scored 18, also with four threes. Edie Darby had a dozen with a pair of threes.
Mi’Kayla Gill and Whitley Smith led McKenzie with eight points each. Smith had a three-pointer.
Rebels 66, Yellowjackets 46
The Rebels had a 15-11 lead after the first frame, led by Nate Whitsell and Ben Austin with five points each, each with a three-pointer. Lazarick Hill also hit a three, and Lucas King had a pair. Jackson Crouse led Greenfield with eight points, including a pair of threes, and Jacob Floyd also hit a three.
McKenzie added to the lead with an 11-10 edge in the second quarter, led by Austin with four points. King hit a three-pointer, and Whitsell and Caleb Gill each had a pair. Crouse and Joshua Floyd each scored five for Greenfield, each with a three-pointer. At the half, the Rebels led 26-21.
The Rebels pulled away in the third with a 20-6 tilt, led by Austin with 14 points. King, Hill and Micah Austin each had a pair. Jacob Floyd hit a three-pointer for the Yellowjackets, and Joshua Floyd also scored three points. Heading into the final frame, McKenzie led 46-27.
McKenzie sealed the win with a 20-19 advantage in the fourth, led by Whitsell and B. Austin with four points each. Lane Horton scored three points. King, Hill and Tyler Spivey each had a pair. M. Austin, Gill and Brandon Hobson each hit a free throw. Crouse led Greenfield with ten points, including a three. Joshua Floyd scored four, Jacob Floyd hit a three-pointer, and Nyrail Jackson had a pair.
Rebel Ben Austin led all scorers with 27 points. He had a three-pointer and was eight-for-eight at the line. Nate Whitsell scored eleven with a three-pointer, and Lucas King had nine, also with a three. Jackson Crouse led Greenfield with 23 points. He hit four three-pointers and was seven-of-eight at the line. Joshua Floyd scored a dozen with a three-pointer, and Jacob Floyd had nine on a trio of threes.
