Football Playoff Picture
1A Coming into Focus, 2A Up in the Air
From the Oct 22, 2024 e-EditionWith two weeks remaining in the regular season, the playoff picture is becoming more clear, although there are still some consequential games to be played.
In Class 1A Region 6, McKenzie sits in the pole position with a 4-0 region record (8-0 overall), having clinched the region title two weeks ago. Houston County (3-1) and McEwen (2-1) can still reach four region wins, but McKenzie owns both tiebreakers. West Carroll (2-2) is guaranteed a playoff spot, but are out of contention for a home game.
If McEwen is defeated by Hollow Rock-Bruceton Friday and by Houston County next week, West Carroll could move into third place with a win over McKenzie. McEwen and Houston County both own the tiebreakers over West Carroll, eliminating the chance for a home playoff game in the first round.
Regardless of the outcome Friday, McEwen can still earn the runner-up spot and a home game with a win over Houston County the following week.
In a crowded Class 2A Region 6, four teams are sitting at 4-1 with another at 3-2. All five teams finish the season with two region games.
Huntingdon is statistically in second place behind Milan, ahead of Riverside and Peabody. JCM, coming off back-to-back region losses, is on the outside looking in, but very much alive. Any of those five teams could end up in first or fifth, depending on their final two games.
Huntingdon’s remaining games are against Camden (1-4 in Region 6) and Peabody.
