Students in West Carroll’s Mrs. Shanna Pafford’s 6th-grade 4-H program are putting science into action by designing and building wind turbines—all on a budget of just $10. This hands-on project not only sparks creativity but also aligns with state science standards, reinforcing key STEM concepts like energy transformation, aerodynamics, and engineering design.

Using everyday materials such as straws, Popsicle sticks, spoons, and cups, participants construct and test their turbines to measure energy output. The process encourages problem-solving and innovation as students refine their designs for better efficiency.

By integrating renewable energy education into the classroom, this initiative equips young learners with valuable STEM skills, preparing them for future opportunities in science and engineering. Their work demonstrates that with curiosity and determination, big ideas can thrive—no big budget required.

WCES extends its gratitude to Amanda Paschal, University of Tennessee Agent III 4-H Youth Development, for her dedication to our students.
