HUNTINGDON (April 20) — Seventeen Carroll County students were the guests of honor at Mallard’s Restaurant Monday, April 20, at the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce’s annual ACT Luncheon.
Each of the students scored a superscore of 29 or higher on the national ACT exam, for which the highest score is a 36. This score places each student in the top eight-percent of students across the nation who took the ACT.
The chamber began honoring students with high ACT scores in 2013, recognizing their achievement with wall plaques inside the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce building.
Carroll County Chamber of Commerce President Brad Hurley estimated that, since 2013, approximately 3,900 students have graduated from Carroll County schools.
In that time, only 184 of those students have made a 29 or higher on their ACT exam.
Hurley spoke to the students on behalf of the chamber board.
“The board wanted you to know that Carroll County is your home,” Hurley said. “We are proud of you today. We’ll be proud of you tomorrow. We’ll be proud of you 10 years from now.”
Hurley asked for students to stay true to themselves and to one day return to Carroll County to build their careers.
“This is your home, and we want you to always know you can come home,” Hurley said. “Regardless of if you change paths, whatever you want to do, this is your home.”
Hurley also challenged students to give back to their teachers by saying thank you.
Of the honorees, six were from Huntingdon High School, four were from McKenzie High School, three were from Hollow Rock-Bruceton Central High School, two were from Clarksburg School, one was from West Carroll Jr./Sr. High School and one was homeschooled.
