DRESDEN (April 4) — American Legion Post 94 in Dresden remains active, despite public perception that it closed several years ago. The misunderstanding followed a membership decision to close the on-site bar and transition to an alcohol-free facility. While that change led some to believe the Post had shut down, it continues to serve local veterans and the community.

The building had visibly deteriorated in recent years, with the shingled section of the roof in particularly poor condition due to repeated storm damage. Fundraising efforts and a membership vote led to a full roof replacement, completed by Elton Hamilton Roofing of Dresden on March 26.

Post 94 and its Auxiliary Unit are seeking new members and volunteers. Like all civic and veterans organizations, their long-term future depends on new involvement, particularly from younger individuals. Ongoing community outreach includes annual bake sales and yard sales organized by the Auxiliary, and the placement of wreaths on local veterans’ graves by Post members.

Post 94 also works to coordinate efforts with other veterans organizations in the area, including Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), Disabled American Veterans (DAV), and American Veterans (AMVETS). These partnerships strengthen the overall mission and allow Posts to assist one another when needed.

An example of such cooperation is underway, with Doug Marshall, Commander of Post 47 in Huntingdon, currently building two new signs for Post 94. One sign will be installed at the Post, while the second is designed for portable use at off-site events.

The Post hall remains available for event rentals, including family reunions, birthday parties, and Christmas gatherings. The facility features a small commercial kitchen, including a 10-burner stove with double ovens, a food prep area, and all necessary utensils and cookware. A four-well buffet table is also available in the dining area. Rentals that include use of the kitchen and utilities are charged at a higher rate than for the main hall alone.

There are approximately 3,600 veterans in Weakley County, with similar numbers in nearby areas. Veterans are encouraged to join the organization of their choice to help sustain these community institutions.

Post 94 and Auxiliary Unit 94 wish to thank E.W. James & Sons in Dresden and Tate Family Foods in Greenfield for their support in recent fundraising and membership efforts. Their cooperation helped make the cost of the new roof more manageable.

The future of American Legion Post 94 and Auxiliary Unit 94 is still being written.
