April is National Stress Awareness Month
Simple Steps to Feel Better
From the Apr 14, 2026 e-EditionApril is recognized as National Stress Awareness Month—a time to reflect on how stress affects our daily lives and to take simple steps toward better health.
Stress is something we all experience. In fact, studies show that between 75% and 90% of doctor’s office visits are related to stress-related conditions. While a small amount of stress can motivate us, ongoing stress can take a toll on both our physical and mental health.
Stress can affect nearly every part of the body. It may cause headaches, trouble sleeping, anxiety, or difficulty concentrating. It can also impact heart health, digestion, and even weaken the immune system over time.
The good news is that there are simple, effective ways to manage stress:
Get enough sleep – Aim for 7–8 hours each night.
Stay active – Even a short walk can boost mood and reduce tension.
Take deep breaths – A few slow, deep breaths can calm your body quickly.
Talk to someone – Sharing concerns with a friend or trusted individual helps lighten the load.
Make time for yourself – Enjoy hobbies, music, or quiet moments to recharge.
Eat balanced meals – Proper nutrition supports both physical and emotional health.
Think of stress like holding a glass of water—the longer you hold it, the heavier it feels. Taking breaks and setting it down for a while is essential.
This month, challenge yourself to take one small step each day to reduce stress. Whether it’s a walk outside, a phone call to a friend, or simply pausing to breathe, those small actions can make a big difference.
