For nearly 18 years, Matthew Holt has faithfully served the Renaissance Program at Bethel University, helping shape it into one of the most vibrant and innovative performing arts experiences in the nation.

Matthew’s journey with Renaissance began as Associate Director of the Vocal Program, where his leadership and musical excellence quickly made an impression. He later served as Associate Creative Director, before being named Executive Director in 2014, a role in which he faithfully led the program for more than a decade with a steady hand and a deep commitment to its mission.

Reflecting on his time at Bethel, Matthew shared, “The last (almost) 18 years of serving the Renaissance Program at Bethel University has been very special, and we will always be grateful for our time here and the countless memories that we will carry in our hearts forever! It has truly been an honor to be a part of such a special program and to see so many lives changed (including our own) as a result of the work that’s being done.”

During his tenure, Matthew provided leadership to an estimated 1,500 students and helped guide a program that presented more than 100 performances annually. He also directed and traveled extensively with Renaissance groups throughout the United States and internationally, including the Philippines and Colombia. These countless rehearsals, performances and travel opportunities became part of a larger legacy—one defined by opportunity, growth and meaningful experiences for the students who passed through Renaissance.

Renaissance is truly unique. Renaissance is an extracurricular performing arts experience designed to complement students’ academic pursuits, and it has encompassed an extraordinary breadth of artistic expression—from gospel choirs to bluegrass bands, from musical theatre to marching band, from gospel quartets to contemporary a cappella vocal groups and nearly everything in between.

Renaissance holds a distinctive place within the life of Bethel University, and Matthew was uniquely equipped to lead a program of such scope, diversity, and influence.

While many recognize Matthew’s extraordinary musicianship—including his work as pianist for Bill Gaither and the Gaither Vocal Band and his distinction as a Grammy- and Dove-nominated artist—his leadership role over nearly two decades has also played a significant part in shaping Renaissance.

Newly named Interim Executive Director Dr. Scott Shepherd shared, “Matthew’s incredible musicianship is widely known—he is truly a prodigy—but what many may not see is the steadiness he has brought to Renaissance through many seasons of growth and change. The way he has consistently advocated for the program—its staff and its students—is a testament to his care and belief in its mission. His influence on Renaissance will prove invaluable as the program moves into the future.”

Aubrey Doyle, Director of Renaissance Theatre, shared, “Matthew has led with integrity, creativity, and has always strived to keep God at the forefront of everything we do. As much as we are sad to see him go, we bless him as he continues on the path God has for his life.”

“On a personal level, it has been a privilege to serve alongside Matthew,” Shepherd continued. “His steadiness in moments of pressure, his clarity in moments of uncertainty, and his unwavering commitment to our program have shaped not only Renaissance—but those of us who have had the privilege of working with him and countless others who enjoyed the diverse and extraordinary performances during his tenure.”

Matthew’s heart for Renaissance and Bethel University remains evident as he looks toward the future: “We wish Bethel University and the Renaissance program nothing but the very best. I know the program will be in good hands, as Dr. Scott Shepherd has been named the Interim Executive Director of Renaissance. He is a very talented man and is well-respected as a leader. His level of integrity and heart for our staff and students will ensure success moving forward. I look forward to seeing the ways that God will continue using the Renaissance Program to impact future leaders, but ultimately, to draw people closer to Him.”

Matthew now begins a new season of ministry at First Baptist Church of Martin while continuing his professional work as a pianist and producer and investing in his family—his wife Lindsey and their four children: Fletcher, Ridley, Carver and Mary Mae.

Regarding this next chapter, Matthew shared, “We are extremely excited about this next season for our family and ministry, and we give God all of the glory for the incredible opportunities He has given us to serve Him.”

As Renaissance looks ahead, we do so with deep gratitude. Matthew’s leadership represents an important chapter in the history of this program, and his work has helped shape the foundation on which Renaissance will continue to build.

While we celebrate all that has been, we also press forward with confidence and hope—committed to continuing the mission, building on the strong foundation that has been laid, and investing in the next generation of Renaissance students.

Matthew, thank you for your leadership, your musicianship, and your years of faithful service to Renaissance. Your fingerprints will remain on Renaissance for generations.
