Bethel Rallies to Defeat Cumberland

McKENZIE (October 11) — In a classic Mid-South Conference battle at Walter Butler Stadium, Bethel University pulled off a dramatic 28-24 comeback win over Cumberland University on Saturday afternoon.

The Wildcats overcame a ten-point fourth-quarter deficit, fueled by explosive plays from running back Jordan Cason and wide receiver Ray Harvey, to move to 3-2 on the season.

The first quarter was a defensive slugfest, with both teams trading punts and struggling to establish rhythm. Cumberland struck first early in the second quarter when quarterback Jake Parker connected with Jarrius Rogers on a deep 79-yard strike down the right sideline, putting the Phoenix ahead 7-0.

Bethel answered moments later with a patient 11-play, 75-yard drive capped by Cason’s 2-yard plunge to even the score. Parker and the Phoenix retook control just before the break as Kaiden Hatchett hauled in a 38-yard touchdown reception, giving Cumberland a 14-7 halftime advantage.

The Wildcats wasted no time finding life after the break. Following a Cumberland interception, quarterback Destin Chance found his favorite target, Ray Harvey, streaking across the middle for a 36-yard touchdown that tied the game at 14-14.

Cumberland responded with a 13-play drive capped by Jack Kantner’s 29-yard field goal, nudging the Phoenix back in front 17-14 late in the third quarter. Early in the fourth, Parker again showcased his arm strength, connecting with Isaiah O’Neal for a 16-yard touchdown to give Cumberland what looked like a commanding 24-14 lead.

Bethel’s offense wasn’t finished. On the ensuing drive, Cason broke loose for a 33-yard touchdown run, slicing the deficit to 24-21 just 35 seconds later. After a defensive stand, Chance led another quick strike, hitting Harvey for his second touchdown of the game, a 20-yard score that put Bethel ahead 28-24 with just under ten minutes to play.

Cumberland had two late chances to retake the lead, including a drive that reached the Bethel 6 yard line in the final minutes. The Wildcat defense, anchored by Darrien Lewis, Brylan Jordan and Durrell Miller, stood tall with a crucial fourth-down stop to preserve the win.

Bethel Head Coach Chris Springer praised his team’s resilience after the win. “We showed a lot of heart today. Cumberland is a tough, physical team, and our guys didn’t flinch when we got down in the fourth quarter. That’s the kind of response you want to see from a group that’s learning how to finish.”

Up next, Bethel (3–2, 2–0 MSC) travels to Cumberlands (KY) on October 25.

The Wildcats’ comeback victory keeps them unbeaten in conference play and marks another chapter in their growing rivalry with Cumberland–one that once again lived up to its billing.
