McKENZIE — Bethel University’s Gaines Pool is slated to close because of the maintenance cost of the indoor swimming pool.

In a Facebook post, Bethel announced, “It is with great sadness that we share this news. Bethel has decided to close the Gaines Pool. The cost to maintain is just too much at this time. It will be drained as of June 1.

“Thank you to all who have hosted your parties here, brought your children to swim, or have enjoyed swimming some laps.

“We are actively researching ways to help fund the pool and cover the expenses — if you are aware of a grant available (or have any other suggestions) please contact us. We are hoping this is a short term closure, and that one day the pool will once again be available for our community!”

The pool is inside the Baker Field house.

Roy N. Baker Field House, constructed in 1969, is located at 15 Baker Drive, the Field House is named to honor Dr. Baker of Whiteville, Tenn. He was president of Bethel University from 1945-1968. The field house contains the multipurpose gymnasium, Gaines Indoor Pool, offices for physical education faculty, and classrooms.
