Bethel University Renaissance Theatre presents Come From Away
McKENZIE — Bethel University Renaissance Theatre presents Come From Away at the Bethel Performing Arts Center, 641 in McKenzie, Tennessee, on November 6, 7, 13, and 14.
The musical tells the story of the people of Gander, Newfoundland, whose small town suddenly became a refuge when flights were diverted there after the September 11 attacks. As thousands of unexpected travelers arrived, residents opened their homes and found ways to care for people from around the world. Based on real events, Come From Away celebrates the kindness, humor, and human connection that can emerge in a time of crisis.
“Come From Away is rooted in kindness and in people coming together to care for others,” said director Aubrey Doyle. “At a time when our world can feel increasingly divided, we were drawn to this musical’s reminder that people can respond to tragedy with compassion, generosity, and hope.”
The production features 41 Bethel students. Principal roles include Grace Barber as Beverley, Nathan Salvador as Kevin T., Jayden Hendricks as Mayor Claude, Allie Slater as Dianne, Haylie Bowien as Hannah, and Jeremiah Britt as Bob.
“As music director, I’ve had the privilege of hearing this story take shape through these students’ performances. More than once, their voices and the emotion they bring to the music have moved me to tears. What they’ve accomplished is extraordinary” said Dr. Scott Shepherd, associate dean of Bethel University’s School of Visual & Performing Arts and the production’s music director.
Doyle directs the production, with Bala Boyd leading lighting, costume, and set design. Kellye Sheppard is assistant music director, and Mike Murphy is sound engineer.
